  • 22. 'WCnewsmagazine Summer festivals By Rachel Mitchell + Wenewsmagazine Festivals are a way for different people and cultures to come together. The smells, food, games, sites and atmosphere are unique to any festival. What better way to enjoy summer than to spend the day experiencing new and unusual sights in Western North Carolina. Entering its 22 season, the Appalachian Summer Festival draws crowds of more than 25,000 people and was named one of the Top 20 Events in the Southeast by the Southeast Tourism Society. The festival includes music, dance, theatre, and visual arts from talents around the world. It has been regarded as one of the nations most multi- iplinary and innovated annual arts festivals. Though art festivals are not for everyone, there is the Blue Ridge Barbecue Festival in Tryon, NC. BBQ can be smelled from miles away and is. two straight days of cook-offs against chefs competing to win the title of Grand Champion. The festival has even been awarded the National Spirit of Barbecue award as the best BBQ event in the country. Not only do the judges get to sample great BBQ, but anyone can. The competitors do not sell their BBQ to the public but are often just groups of friends who enjoy getting together to cook great BBQ. Trophies and a cash prize of over $20,000 are what await the. winners of the competition. There is also beach bingo, a craft fair and non-stop live music as entertainment for all people. Smilefest at Lake Toxaway, NC began as a celebration of Jerry Garcia and has now become one of the diverse collections of band in the country. Dubbed as a Celebration of Peace, Love & Music in the North Carolina Sunshine," this festival is in its 12 year and attracts up to 50 bands or more. Non- profit and community service groups provide entertainment, and the festival has anew theme each year. Performers include Michael Franti & Spearhead, Larry Keel, Yonder Mountain String Band, Keller Williams and other premier jam and White water rafting at the NOC -Ride the Great Smoky Mountain ilroad strawberry picking ~Check out the local Farmer's Market bluegrass bands. Each year Smilefest grows larger and more successful at bringing music to the general public, An addition to these bands, there is one band that was created from students of WCU called After Dark. This increasing popular band is influenced by Prince, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Beatles and other famous bands. Band members inolude Tyler Cates on guitar and vocals, Mike Alexander on drums, Kip Thomas on bass, Brad Arthurs on percussion, and Wes Simpson with direction of commercial and electronic music. Smilefest will be held June 2-4. For more information visit Smilefest.com. The Foothills Highland Games and Festival brings the most rigorous and historic games of the Scottish clansman. Practiced for nearly a thousand years, these games were played during times of peace and are a test of physical and mental strength. Also, competitors in these games show their seriousness of tradition by wearing the Scottish kilts during the competition. Entertainment includes traditional dancing, piping, a Celtic Rock concert and Scottish games. In Asheville there is the Southeast largest free-street festival, the Bele Chere. Set in historic downtown Asheville, this international festival offers individuals live music, artistry from glass to painting and the Urban Boot Camp Challenge. In the challenge, twelve competitors will compete against each testing their physical strength, creative thinking and mental abilities in a live Survivor senior. The winner receives a seven day all expense paid cruise for two on the Royal Caribbean. This outdoor festival brings in close to 400,000 people each year and hosts events for kids and adults. The festivals mentioned above represent only a few of the many summer festivals in Westem North Carolina.
