  • 20 | WCnewsmagazine Sex in the Media By Russell Conover + WCnewsmagazine S-E-X. When used together, these three letters cause people to sit up and take notice. The media takes advantage of this by using sex to sell products, obtain audiences, and appeal to the general public. However, since sex is considered an intimate act, moral issues rise about whether it is appropriate to use in general society. Here are a few of the places sex can be found in today's media. Advertisements. Ads are all around us because companies need to make money. A number of these companies attempt to attract the attention of consumers by using scantily clothed models and other somewhat risqu methods of advertising. For example, companies such as Victoria's Secret. sometimes advertise on television during the day when young children might happen to see, rather than waiting until the evening. Sexin ads certainly catches people's eyes, and it may entice them to try the product being advertised, but companies run the risk of offending audiences with their advertising. Here, companies must find a way to appeal to certain consumers without being distasteful to others. Television. Whenever a person tums on the tube, he or she has a chance of seeing some potentially controversial material. This has become more common in recent years as the censors have been less strict on the material that is and is not permitted on television. Sex in the City, for example, hhas the word sex prominently in its title, suggesting what content lies in its stories. While most people do not immediately try to perform the acts they see (on TY, intimacy being so common in programs reflects some people's interest in seeing such scenes. Sex on TV reflects some viewers desire to see public displays of affection through the box in their living rooms, although others prefer to keep explicit love scenes in the privacy of people's personal lives. The new TV ratings system, similar to that used in movies, has helped viewers evaluate the content of television programs, but pleasing all audiences is stil difficult. Movies. The movie industry also shows that people in society are interested in the intimate lives of others. While the majority of movies are not sexually explicit, a good number feature at least a scene or two with some somewhat risqu romance. The James Bond movies, for instance, regularly show some intimate content in addition to the explosions and chases. Sex in movies shows that viewers want to escape into the personal lives of others, whether to inspire themselves or just to enjoy a show in the theater. Stores. Sex in stores is primarily used to attract people's attention. Whether through the use of images of sexy models or simply the strategi placement of items such as swimsuits and lingerie, people's interest in sex often draws them to the products being sold. They also tend to lead shoppers to other areas in the stores, increasing their time among the products and potentially the money they spend. With the use of eye-catching items such as these, stores are also able to sell more of other merchandise as well. Sex is a central part of human culture, and the media often uses it to appeal to people. Benefits of including sex in the media include attracting people's attention and showing the goodness of intimacy, but the downfalls include the risk of offending people and the loss of the personal feeling associated with sex. The media must work to find a balance between these two sides in order for sex to appeal to people without being offensive to them. Brokeback Mountain: More than just a gay cowboy movie By Kelsey Reynolds + Wenewsmagazine Brokeback Mountain is the story of two men, Jack Twist and Ennis del Mar, who meet and fall in love while working as ranch hands herding sheep one summer in 1960's Wyoming. The movie chronicles the lives and love affair of the two men over the course of the next twenty years and the effects that their affair has on their families. The reaction to Brokeback Mountain has been mixed. Though it is a critically acclaimed movie and was nominated for multiple Oscars, there has been somewhat of a backlash for the film in the general public. Many are reluctant to see the film as it has been labeled the gay cowboy movie. This isnt an incorrect statement; the film is about two cowboys who are gay, but to call Brokeback Mountain just a gay cowboy movie" is barely scratching the surface of the message that itis trying to convey. Based on the short story by Annie Prouxl, Brokeback Mountain is a strong statement about a love that is unconventional but stil forgive the clich here, conquers all while having its doubts, sorrows and setbacks. The film is, trying to get across that love is love no matter who it is between. The love scenes in the film are done tastefully and are necessary to the development of the plot. They are authentic and actors Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger (Jack Twist and Ennis del Mar respectively) have a good, COMMENTARY believable chemistry together. The most interesting part of the movie is how believable it actually is. The setting is true to the economically depressed state that encompasses much of the state of Wyoming. The ideas, costuming and sets are true to the 1960's-1980's era. The ways that society looked at homosexuality at that time are also realistically portrayed. Twist and del Mar begin their affair and then only see each other every few years out in the woods on fishing trips. Both are married to women land have children, but they are almost magnetically attracted to each other. Del Mar's wife sees the two men kissing, and the story focuses on her life for a moment and how Del Mar affects her family. Twist goes to Mexico and has affairs with several men; later, Twist reveals this to del Mar and the film addresses how this affects their relationship. The movie takes the viewer through many complicated twists and turns, but it never loses the viewer. If one can get over the stigma of the gay cowboy movie, Brokeback Mountain is a worthwhile experience. The film teaches valuable lessons. about relationships without being preachy and is actually a very touching and incredible love story that will eave the viewer both heartbroken and questioning his or her own relationships.
