What you say on MySpace and Facebook today can hurt you tomorrow By Jessica Jarrard Wenewsmagazine MySpace and Facebook have taken the country by storm. Individuals across the country have looked to blogging as a way to express themselves. While this is a. good way to keep up with long lost friends and have an outlet for expression, itis also a way for future employers to keep up with you. Students often don't realize that someday they are going to wake up in their thirties and blush at the things they did in college. Even if you are proud of some of those moments in secret, you certainly wouldn't be proud if your boss pointed them out. While we all recognize that these experiences are a vital part of growing up, few want to be reminded of them in a job interview. A picture of you completely toasted should not appear on the cover of your application file. Your personal life and professional life should be kept private. Usually, that is how people like it. Putting your personal life on the web makes it public and no longer personal How do employers find you? Your email address is the fastest and easiest way. Remember how you were asked for your email address when you signed up? MySpace allows you to search for someone by using only their email address. You may have noticed how hard itis to find a friends by putting in only their names. Try putting in either your email or their email address and see how fast MySpace can locate youlthem. Scary, isn't it? Usually, when you apply for COMMENTARY a job, your rsum includes all of your contact information including your email address. A lot of times, people email their application. This gives employers everything they need to know in order to search for you on MySpace. Facebook is a bit different. Even though it isn't as widely used (you have to be enrolled in high school or college to have an account), itis still used by a large number of students who will someday be in search of a job Inappropriate photos or comments can get you in trouble here as well. While Facebook does not allow for nearly as much freedom of expression, it does allow enough to cost you a job later in life. Since it is easiest to find people through email, one might think that keeping your personal email separate from work email is the best way to keep yourself hidden. While that is true, it does not make you immune. There are many different ways for employers to find you on the internet, Many students feel they have done everything they can to prepare themselves for a job by way of coursework and extracurricular activities. This might be true; however, one incriminating photo or vulgar statement can be the only thing standing between you and your dream job. Think about that before you post pictures and comments on the web.
