  • Western holds off Furman to win 85-76 By Andy Gambill + Wnewsmagazine The Western Carolina mens basketball team held off a strong rally by the Furman Paladins to win 85-76 on Beach Night in Cullowhee. The Catamounts were up by as much as 18 points in the first half of the game before allowing Furman back into the game late in the half. The Paladins eventually took the lead 8 minutes into the second half, but the Cats were able to hold off Furman the rest of the way to notch the win, Leading the way for the Catamounts was Negus MoKenna. McKenna was the star of the game as he poured in a career-high 24 points and pulled down 7 rebounds. Negus hit 7 of 9 from three-point range as he did an amazing job coming off the bench against the Paladins. Also giving the Cats strong games were Antonio Russell, Corey Muirhead, and David Berghoefer. Westem's leading scorer so far in the season Antonio Russell put up 18 points and grabbed 8 boards. Seniors _Berghoefer and Muirhead are showing Cat fans they have both finally put it together. Berghoefer, apre-season 1team SoCon pick, has supplied both for Western this year, and on the 30 against Furman it was no different as he had 10 points, 12 rebounds, and 3 steals. Muirhead had 16 points, 3 steals, and one monster dunk against Furman. The win pushed Western's record to 10-13 overall this year and 4-4 in the SoCon, The game started with a barrage of 3's from both teams as Antonio Russell and Kyle Greathouse both hit three-pointers for the Cats while Eric Webb and Robby Bostain hit three-pointers for Furman. This led to a 9-6 lead for WCU with 15:54 left in the first half. Furman came back and tied the game at 14 with another three by Bostain, but Western went on a monster run from that point. The Cats went on a 22-5 run to shoot ahead 36-19 with 7:30 left. The run started with 3 straight three-pointers by Western, including two by Negus and one by Eric Wilson. that looked like it was shot all the way from Asheville. After a timeout at 11:15, the Cats kept on pushing the ball as Corey Muirhead came up with the play of the game. After a steal by Negus, the ball found its way to Muirhead who took off like MJ with legs spread and slammed it down over a Paladin defender to electrify the crowd. A couple of plays later, David Berghoefer hit Trey Hopkins on a beautiful backdoor cut for a lay-up, but Hopkins was fouled and missed the shot. Luckily, he nailed both the free throws. The Cats were controlling the tempo, boards, and basically the whole Paladin team. Hopkins drove to the Muirhead makes the points. Photo by Mark Haskett WCnewsmagazine basket a couple of plays later and threw up a bad lay-up while going out of bounds, but Berghoefer dunked in the miss and forced another timeout with 7:30 left. Western came out hot once again with a Negus follow-up dunk on a miss by Russell. After Russell hit a floater off glass to push the lead to 18, the Paladins decided they were not going to quit and went on a 14-4 run to end the half and cut the lead to 46-38 at halftime. Webb and Bostain paced the drive for Furman as Webb had 5 points and Bostain had 7 points on the run. Western went cold from long-distance to end the first half; the second straight home game they had went cold in the last two or three minutes of the first half. Luckily, this time the Cats were not dismantled by the freeze-out Furmans catch-up _play continued into the second half as they cut the lead to four by the 15:58 mark, then to two by 11:45, finally they had the lead at 64-63 with 8:08 left. The Cats did not fall apart though, as Negus hit a three-pointer out of the timeout to reclaim the lead at 66-64. Furman tied the game back up with a backdoor cut to Webb Who then hit a baseline jumper to make it 66-66 with 7:13 left. After Wester called a 30-second timeout, Corey Muirhead drove to the hoop and laid the ball in to get the lead back. Western outplayed the Paladins over the next three minutes to push | the lead to four at 74-70 as Furman was inundated with more Muirhead, Berghoefer, and McKenna. Moussa Diagne was fouled on the next play but hit both free throws to cut the lead to two with 2:26 remaining. The Cats finished the game on an 11-4 run as they hit 9 of 10 from the free throw line to ice the game and win 85-76. The loss dropped Furman to 12- 8 overall and 5-3 in SoCon play. The Paladins were led by Eric Webb, Robby Bostain, and Moussa Diagne in the losing effort. The junior sharpshooters Webb and Bostain had 21 and 17 respectively. Senegal native Moussa Diagne had 12 points and 5 rebounds as he had a number of dunks, but they did no good as the crowd was never depleted by the throwdowns. While there was only a disappointing 1327 in the crowd for Beach Night, farless than last year's game against ASU, the crowd was especially helpful for the Cats and loved the great effort they saw from their Catamounts. The Cats played excellently, especially from beyond the arc. While they did blow an 18- point lead before eventually winning, they showed a toughness and resiliency that was nowhere to be seen at a mens basketball game in the Ramsey Center last year. Just another Hunter habit these Catamount men have gained from the coach. 27
