WCU police use alternate transportation on campus By Russell Conover + Wenewsmagazine Anew network of EZ-Go golf carts provides a convenient means of transportation for various departments on campus. The police department uses two of these carts for parking services. The department previously payed $12,000 per year to the state motor fleet for the use of one pickup truck for parking services. However, the cost of using one pickup truck for one year was about the same as purchasing two golf carts. As a result, the parking staff now has two vehicles to use instead of one. The two carts for the police department are used to move through parking lots. Other purposes for their use by other departments include making deliveries on campus and picking up and delivering computers. The university has started using a set of police officers who ride bicycles to navigate campus. The money for these bicycles came out of the budget of the police department. Police officers started using the bikes about two years ago. After the hurricane last fall and the increase in gas prices that occurred at the same time, the bikes were found to be a good alternate form of transportation to save fuel costs. The bikes are good for public relations and for contact with the community. The bikes are very effective in parking lots. They are easier to navigate around campus, and they can go where automobiles cannot go.
