  • 4 WCnewsmagazine Letter to the Editor: Dear Editor, | am currently in a diversity course taught through the Social Work Department. This course has brought to my attention some of the injustices and degradation brought upon blacks, as well as other races that are not Anglo-Saxon. However, this course has also brought to my attention the injustices that whites have been served. | was looking up events to put in a newsletter for my hall and stumbled upon the student affairs page and the many scholarships offered at Western Carolina University. Out of the nine total scholarships listed on the websites | looked at, two were for only African-American students. African- American students make up less than 4% of the student population yet they are getting more than 22% of the scholarships along, with the opportunity to apply for the other scholarships. This is not fair. Why are there not White, Asian, or Latino scholarships? it makes me think this school is more concerned about the percentage of Black students attending, and giving the few that do extra benefits so as to encourage more attendance; yet the schoo! is not doing so with the rest of the student body. Itis not fair to treat one race different than another; isn't that what all this month is trying to bring awareness to? Why should not get to apply for all the scholarships just because | am White? If my uncle were Black, would that make a difference? When do we start defining Blackness?
