  • MCA Highlights By Kelli E. McNair + WGnewsmagazine Inlight of Black History Month, the Multicultural Affairs many organizations look forward to the month's events. Everything starts on Feb. 1 at 6 p.m. with a Multicultural Career Workshop in the Multipurpose Room of the University Center. Everyone is encouraged to attend to learn about preparing themselves for a multicultural workforce. The event is co-sponsored with Career Services. Feb. 2- Look forward to the Nappy Roots concert presented by Last Minute Productions in the Ramsey Center at 8 p.m. The admissions fee is $10 with student ID, $15 for general public, and $15 for tickets sold at the door. Feb. 6 presents two programs - Safe Zone Training Part | and Black History Trivia Game. Safe Zone Training Part 1 will be held in the Multipurpose Room A from 12:2 p.m, Safe Zone program provides training, support, resources and a network of allies to educate and enhance acceptance of gender and sexual orientations on campus and in the local community. The Black History Trivia game, aimed to increase knowledge on black history, will be held on the 2" floor of the UC, beginning at 9 p.m. Feb. 7 - African-American Women and Depression, presented by Sara MoFadden of the Counseling Center, will be held in the Multipurpose Room at 7 p.m. The attendants of that program will gain knowledge about the effects of depression on African- American women in today's society. Everyone is encouraged to attend this event. Feb. 8 Safe Zone Training Part I will be held in the Multipurpose Room A from 12-2 p.m. Feb. 9 - Jazz Flutist Galen, with a time to be determined, is scheduled for Illusions. The Black Theatre Ensemble will also be holding Cullowhee Idol Auditions on Feb. 9 and Feb. 23. Feb. 16- A Jazz Poetry Night will be presented by BTE at 9 p.m. in Illusions. Feb. 17 ~ Project C.A.R.E will be presenting The Crunkest Ski Trip Ever Part II" at the Cataloochee Ski Area. Feb, 21- Look forward to a Multicultural Showcase presented by the Multicultural Advisory Council at 9 p.m. in the UC Grandroom. The showcase allows everyone to come out to view or show their talents, model their fashions, etc. Feb. 22 Step Afrika, a U.S-based percussive dance ensemble from Washington, D.C.. is set to perform in the Fine and Performing Arts Center at 7:30 p.m. Step Afrika highlights Aftican- American fratemity and sorority art form of stepping and its links to dance traditions around the world. They have performed on stages in North America, South Africa, and Europe. Western Carolina University Lectures, Concerts, and Exhibitions and Multicultural ASfairs are co-sponsoring this event. Feb. 27 - March 2 ~ Multicultural Affairs, in collaboration with the Black Theatre Ensemble, is presenting One World Week. The week will be dedicated to promoting awareness and diversity. Also, the Tunnel of Oppression will be displayed from 7-9 p.m. on the 3 floor of the UC. The tunnel is a program that is designed to create awareness of various forms of oppression and its effects with society and WCU's campus. Feb. 28 Ending the months events is Morris Dees, a speaker from the Southern Poverty Law Center in FPAC at 7 p.m. Dees is the center founder and chief trial counsel. In his role at SPLC, he participates in suing hate groups and mapping new directions for SPLC.
