  • some WCnewsmagazine 19 Catamounts fall in overtime 90-83 to talented Gardner-Webb team By Andy Gambill + Wnewsmagazine On December 22% the Catamounts took an extremely talented The Bulldogs put every starter into double figures as they were led Gardner-Webb team to the limit before losing 90-83 in overtime. Freshman guard Ricky Webb Bulldogs 4-3 record included a win over Big Ten conference member McPhee led the team in scoring with 18 points as he hit 6 three-pointers while Minnesota and a 3-point loss to defending National Champions UNC. The senior guard Tim Jennings had 16 points. Sophomore forward Brian Bender Bulldogs had their hands full in Cullowhee, though, as the Catamounts played put up 17 points and 7 rebounds. The Bulldogs also had good performances with the Bulldogs basket for basket before running out of gas in overtime. from Simon Conn and T.J. McCullough. Senior point guard T.J. McCullough finished the night with 12 points, 8 assists, and 4 steals while 69" center Simon Conn had 13 points and 8 rebounds. The Catamounts placed four players in double figures as they were led by senior David Berghoefer and sophomore Antonio Russell. Preseason first team SoCon pick David Berghoefer put up 28 points and pulled down 8 rebounds while leading scorer Antonio Russell put up 20 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 steals. Corey Muirhead came off the bench to give the Cats another good game as he scored 15 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. The final good performance of the night was by starting guard Eric Wilson as Wilson finished with 10, points as he hit two 3-pointers. Wester jumped out to a quick lead in the game as they led 10-7 with 15 minutes left in the half. Berghoefer and Wilson scored all 10 of the Cats points in the first five minutes as Berghoefer had 6 of the 10 points. The Cats continued their run after the media timeout with a 9-2 run over the next three minutes to push the lead to 19-9 as Berghoefer scored 6 more points. After another media timeout at 11:50, the Cats came out with another run, this time it was a 7-2 run to push the lead to 26-11. This time it was Corey Muirhead doing most of the damage with a three-pointer and a mid-range jumper. Gardner-Webb showed why they hung in with the Tar Heels and beat Minnesota as they went on a 14-4 run to close the Wester lead to 30-25 with 3:26 left in the half. The game went back and forth over the last 3 minutes as Western went into halftime with a 37-31 lead. The second half started off fast and furious but still close as Gardner Webb cut the Cat lead to four at 52-48 with 14:16 left in the game. The Bulldogs went on a 9-4 run over the next four minutes to pull ahead at 57-56 for the first time since early in the game. Western pulled back ahead 61-59 with two free throws by Berghoefer and a three-pointer by Kyle Greathouse but Gardner Webb's Chris Gash hit two free throws to tie the game at 61 heading into a media timeout at 7:56. The Bulldogs started to pull away over the next three minutes as they outscored the Cats 12-8 to take a 73-69 lead. The Catamounts stepped it up a notch as the game winded down. The Cats outscored the Bulldogs 12-6 to pull ahead 81-79. Antonio Russell and Jared Outing each had four points on the Catamount run as the Cats forced Gardner Webb into a 30 second timeout with 16 seconds left in the game. With five seconds left though, Simon Conn put back a missed shot to tie the game at 81 and send it into overtime, In overtime the Bulldogs took over as they outscored the Cats 9-2 to win 90-83. The Bulldogs were just too strong down the stretch as it appeared the Catamounts just ran out of the gas. The game was impressive though as the Cats played tough and gave a great effort.
