The Atlanta Ballet pirouettes its way to Western Carolina By Lilli Nicholson + WCnewsmagazine On Friday, November 11, 2005, the Atlanta Ballet Company visited Western Carolina. In the Performance Hall of the recently opened Fine & Performing Arts Center, the ballet company performed selections from Jupiter and The Nutcracker Suite. The ballet and the music of both selections went incredibly well together. The dancers were in sync when they were supposed to be. There were parts in Jupiter when they appeared to be off, but it was sequential steps that weren't supposed to be quite together. Jupiter was a modern number with only eight dancers. There were four men and four women. The background was plain, the costumes were plain and there were no props. It was very minimalist in nature. Props or more involved backgrounds would have taken away from the dancing, which was quite elaborate. This piece was about the give and take of the relationships between the dancers. There were four coupled pairs that danced and a few of the dancers had solos. The Nutcracker Suite was a series of the more famous scenes and Drag queens strut their stuff By Russell Conover + WGnewsmagazine Ifyou're looking for a story on a classy and educational cultural event that recently took place on the campus of Wester Carolina University, look elsewhere in this issue. But if you're curious about a group of very special ladies who took center stage in the U.C. Grand Room, read on. Yes, the WCU drag queens took center stage on the evening of November 8. A sign by the door reading Adult Content" did not deter the crowd because the Grand Room was full of observers. Glowing red lights ran down the center of the audience for runway, balloons hung from the ceiling and were attached to the walls, and an upbeat selection of music enhanced the mood even further. The atmosphere was definitely right for these ladies to Shake what their mama gave them!" Chris Hamilton hosted the event, and Kitty Le Claw was the Master of Ceremonies. Together, they had the honor of introducing the night's performers (who went by the names of Jenny La Claude, Knomie Moore, Coco Couture, Jazelle, Vivica Du Pre, Cybil Vein, and Mikalah Divine). Each of these ladies sported a colorful ensemble of clothing (as well as some female-specific numbers from the ballet. It was much lighter and more playful than Jupiter, and they complemented each other very well. The sets and props of The Nutcracker Suite were much more elaborate and detailed. The dancing was more traditional than Jupiter. The steps of the dances were entertaining yet involved. Some of the scenes were more serious and dramatic than others. There were several scenes that were quite funny. One was about Little Bo Peep; there were actually dancers dressed as sheep. There were two white sheep and one black sheep. In another scene, there were three dancers who were Russian in nature. They bumped chests and danced around the stage like it was nothing. Another scene brought a jester with a hoop. The jester's moves were perfectly in step with the beat of the music. Ballet is a nice change from seeing a movie, watching TV or some other everyday activity; itis a great way to get away for a while. During their multiple walks up and down the stage, the queens got the chance to flaunt their curvaceous bodies and sing or talk to the crowd (with the help of some special effects). The audience got into the performances, and things got even more interesting when the performers visited with some lucky members of the crowd, Dollar bills were shoved into the costumes, of these ladies, and the performances (along with the constant squealing and giggling that resulted) kept the energy level high all night long, Alin all, the WCU Drag Show of 2005 was a big hit. The crowd was begging for more all night long, but eventually the lights went off and everyone went home. However, the performance is set to return around this time next year, so mark your calendars for that important event. The ladies will be ready to set the crowd afire once again. 9
