  • Catamount cross country finishes 6 and 8" at the SoCon Championships By Ryan Sarda * WCnewsmagazine The Southern Links Golf Club in Statesboro, Georgia, was the site of this years 2005 Southern Conference Cross Country Championships. The Western Carolina Mens Cross Country team finished sixth overall in the Championship, while the women placed eighth overall. Appalachian State won the mens race overall, followed by Chattanooga, Furman, Davidson, UNC-Greensboro, and Western Carolina. Rounding out the bottom four were Elon, College of Charleston, The Citadel, and Wofford. It was a record-setting day for the Western Carolina Mens team. Senior Adam Puetts time of 25:14:07 put him 15" overall on the WCU mens 8-K individual list. Junior Dan Fassinger, who ran in his first Southern Conference Championship race, finished with a time of 25:41.78, which is the 21* best time in Catamount history. Puett finished fifth individually in the race, and was named to the All- Southern Conference Team for the third time in his career at Western. It was an honor being named to the All-SoCon team. | ran to the best of my ability, and it just shows that when someone works hard, it pays off, Puett said about his career day. We had a pretty good day out there. We worked hard and | think we got a lot accomplished. This was my first SoCon Championship, and | think it was a decent showing for me. However, there is always room for improvement and | think next year we can win the whole thing, Fassinger said. On the womens side, Davidson left as the Southern Conference Champions, while Chattanooga was runner-up. Following Chattanooga was Appalachian State, Furman, Elon, UNC-Greensboro, College of Charleston, and Western Carolina. The Citadel, Georgia Southern, and Wofford rounded out the bottom three. Not only did the men set records, but the Lady Cats did, too. The Lady Cats, who finished 8" overall, were carried by sophomore Kerrie Savery, who placed 22" in a time of 19:13.86 on the 5-k course. Overall, | think that everyone tried very hard, but | also think we had a lot more potential, we just didnt all put it together on the same day and it cost us, stated Savery. Her time ranks as the 23 best in the schools history. It feels good setting a record, however, | hope to one day make it lower. The only other Catamount close to Savery at the finish line was senior Deanna Kulesz who finished in 32 place with a time of 19:42.64. Freshman Ann. Freshman Raye Lin Chappell finished 66", and sophomore Elizabeth Prevette finished oo foe Up next for the Catamounts is the NCAA East Regionals To do well in the East Regionals, we are going to need a lot of rest and motivation. We have a lot of potential; we just have to believe in ourselves, stated Savery. The Regionals will be held in Greenville, N.C., on Saturday, November 12. Its going to be tough, but if we have confidence in ourselves, and in each other, then | have a feeling that things can go our way. Lady Cats drop three in a row By Sarah Taylor Ryckman * WGnewsmagazine Despite coming off a 3-0 win against UNC-G, Western Carolinas Volleyball team was unable to use their momentum to their advantage, as they dropped three matches in a row and won only two of eleven games in that span. During the game against Chattanooga on October 18, two Lady Cats recorded double-doubles. Meghan Boyle, with a match high of 26 assists, added. 11 digs to lead the Catamount attack. Kate Willard led the defense with 11 assists and 19 digs. Despite the final score, the Lady Cats played a strong game, losing by two, four and six, respectively. The Lady Cats also. fell to Appalachian State on October 21 in three sets. Leading the Catamounts. with offensive hitting was Meredith Harmon, while senior Ellie Talbot led the teams defensive attack. With the loss to App State, Western dropped to 5-7 in the Southern Conference. With the win, App State took second in the conference with an 8-2 record. Western also had its second disappointing 3-2 loss to Davidson, despite what appeared to be a match-winning lead in game four. The WCU volleyball team lost the first game but managed to come back and win the next two games. In the fifth game, the Cats held a 4 point lead with 27, before the Wildcats took the tying game. In a close game 5, the Lady Cats held within two, but were unable to gain a lead as the Davidson Wildcats improved their record in the Southern Conference to 6-4. WCU's record stands at 5-8. The Lady Cats Volleyball team. will host four more home games as well as four more regular season games.
