  • 30 WCnewsmagazine By Andy Gambill + WCnewsmagazine With the Homecoming football game and festivities not too far away, the Western Carolina campus is buzzing with excitement. While the Catamount football team has disappointed students in the last couple of weeks, the Homecoming game should not be a disappointment. With Elon scheduled to come to Cullowhee on October 29", the Catamount team and fans can smell a ball game that is easily within grasp. The game, which starts at 2:00, will pit the 2-3 Catamounts against 3-4 Elon. Western, who is 1-2 in conference play, should be able to dominate the game. Elon has not won a half of the conference in = total offense. The Phoenix are led by sophomore tailback Reggie Hall who is . averaging 97.2 yards m rushing per game and has 6 touchdowns. The quarterback _ position has not been rock solid, as sophomore Kye Hamilton is only averaging 138.3 yards passing per game and has thrown 5 interceptions to 4 touchdowns. Elon does boast a good defense, which is led by the SoCons leading tackler Chad Nkang, who has 102 tackles and 3 sacks. The Catamounts strength is their defense which is ranked 1* in the conference. The Catamount D is only allowing 314.8 yards per game. The Cats D features many outstanding players including Francis Brown, Andre Hemphill, Lamar Barnes and Rico Reese. Brown and Hemphill are both tied for second in the SoCon with 3 interceptions a piece. Barnes leads the Cats in tackles with 35 tackles, while Reese has 33 tackles, 2 sacks and 6 tackles for a loss. Overall, the Catamounts rank second in the conference in forced 4 turnovers with 14. That number includes a conference- leading 10 interceptions. o Elon comes into the game having lost three #@ games in a row, not counting the game this Saturday against 2"-ranked Furman which should be a loss. The & Phoenix started off the season with a loss at home to ff Coastal Carolina 17-10, before going on a three game winning streak. The winning streak included victories at Savannah State 48-14, at home against Presbyterian 34- 19 and North Carolina A&T 12-9. The easy schedule gave @ the Phoenix momentum leading into their first conference game at home against Georgia Southern. That momentum was quickly crushed by the Eagles as Georgia Southern demolished Elon 49-7. The Phoenix bounced back with valiant efforts on the road against Wofford and at home NL Pte OO Homecoming should equal win for Catamount F Football against Chattanooga, but both games resulted in losses; Wofford won 14-9 over Elon, and Chattanooga won 10-7. The Phoenix should not have it any easier on Saturday as they travel to play 2"-ranked Furman and should be on a four game losing streak heading into the game against Western. Western will come into the game against Elon on a bit of a slide. After starting off the season with a tough 21-7 home victory against Mars Hill, the Cats demolished 2"-ranked Furman at home 41-21 in what could be the biggest upset of the year in Division I-AA football. The Cats traveled to Division | Cincinnati next and almost pulled off another shocker before losing 7-3. After the cancellation of the Nicholls State game due to hurricanes, the Catamounts climbed to 18" in the country before falling flat on their face after a week of rest. The Cats struggled through a home game with the Citadel and lost 17- 7. Western then followed up that lousy effort with a 45-7 loss at the hands of Georgia Southern on the road. The Cats head into this weekend looking to recapture their past magic by upsetting 5-2 Chattanooga. The Cats will head into Homecoming weekend either on a roll or riding a four-game losing streak. Homecoming should be a great time for Catamount fans and should feature an exciting game. With that said, my prediction for the game is Western 21, Elon 19.
