  • 6 WCnewsmagazine By Jennifer Scism * Wenewsmagazine What is a hate crime? According to Chief Johnson of Western Carolinas police department, a hate crime is any criminal offense against a person or his or her property that is motivated in whole or in part by an offenders perception and animosity. Victims race, religion, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, or disabilities are all factors that can be considered as grounds for hate crimes to occur. On October 4" Johnson and the police department presented an open forum about hate crimes for students and faculty. Hate crimes are all based on perceptions, or mistakes in perceptions, that individuals hold of others. Motivators of hate crimes can range from gender and age to physical appearance or behavior. These types of crimes seem like they would be easy to predict and simple to evaluate, but according to Johnson, these crimes are difficult for law enforcement to figure out. Another difficult task is proving that hate is actually a crime. Often hate crimes are labeled as simple assault due to the fact that simply hating someone is not a crime. Acting upon that hate is definitely a crime. Laws of certain states, however, do leave room for labeling crimes as hate crimes. Offenders can also be charged with aggravated assault. This infraction can William Bennett: By Jennifer Scism * Wenewsmagazine Former Education Secretary William Bennett exposed his ignorance on a live radio broadcast the last week of September. Bennett is a Republican politician who was active in the Reagan and Bush (senior) presidencies. His comments were down right immoral and significantly ill-bred. As a matter of fact, they were basically the craziest, most out-landish and racist comments anyone could ever say. His comments were reminiscent of the Jim Crow era and caused many people in the political spectrum to respond with negative and outraged sincerity. A caller phoned into Bennett to discuss the idea of lost revenue from the people who have been aborted in the last 30 years. Somewhere in this discussion Bennett chose to sidetrack and say, if you wanted to reduce crime...if that were your sole purpose, you could abort every black baby in this country, and your crime rate would go down. While Bennett did go on to say that aborting African American fetuses would be an impossible, ridiculous and morally reprehensible thing to do, he added once again, but the crime rate would go down. What the hell were you thinking Bennett? Bennett represents a large part of our predominantly white society. Thats what is really scary about this entire fiasco! People actually think and create hypotheses like this one, and because of our technological advancements, those thoughts and ideas have the ability to spread and infiltrate a mass portion of our society. Not only were these comments immoral, but they also empower racism, a problem our country, as a whole, has half-heartedly spent centuries to overcome. _ Another frightening aspect of this drama is that Bennett actually played an active role in our government! Racism comes in many forms. Everyone include arson, harassment, robbery, rape and vandalism. In 2003, 8,706 hate crimes were reported, but there were definitely more hate crimes committed in our country that year. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, there are nearly 50 hate groups in the state of North Carolina, and these are just the groups monitored by the Southern Poverty Law Center. This organization made a name for itself by prosecuting the Ku Klux Klan and other hate groups. They also keep updated lists and details of hate crimes across the nation. Its quite disturbing to visit the Southern Poverty Law Center website and view all of the horrible hate crimes and acts of discrimination reported daily. The state of North Carolina is one of 20 states in our country that does not include protection for sexual orientation regarding hate crimes. The WCU Police department stated our university does protect students and faculty from hate crimes against people of diverse sexual orientations. Being a university setting, our atmosphere is supposed to be accepting of all forms of diversity, and any crime that shuns that goal will be punished severely. Students caught committing hate crimes risk jail time and expulsion from the university. a not so silent racist any longer who is racist does not stand on the corner of your local town wearing a white robe and hood. Those forms of racism are easy to point out. Their exposure makes them easier to analyze and eradicate. While those forms continue to cause many detrimental effects to our countrys tolerance level, its not those forms that infiltrate our government, workplace, schools and homes at such an alarming rate. Silent or covert racism is the type that puts on a smiling face and pretends to be accepting, only to turn around and be immorally intolerant and ignorant. Example: your childs teacher treats all the children in the classroom as their responsibility. That same teacher goes home and scolds their daughter or son for having an African American friend and forbids him or her to date minorities. William Bennett and other politicians are prime examples of this form of racism as well. Bennett represents the portion of society that hides their racist ideals with past achievements and a career. When he was accused of being a racist, he responded with anecdotes of his moral achievements and perspectives from his past; however, if he is not a racist person, he would never dream of stating such controversial things. Instead of creating crazy solutions or suggestions to cure problems such as high crime rates, why cant Americans create solutions to reduce and end poverty and inner city degradation? Instead of generalizing and stereotyping, why cant we as a country step up and use our minds and hearts to create a positive change that can reduce gaps in economics, politics and social injustice? There is a reason why minority groups are harshly plagued by crime. History is the reason, and social activism is the solution for the future. COMMENTARY
