snewsmagazine by Andy Gambill and Ryan Sarda * WCnewsmagazine As expected, Coach Steve Shurina will no longer be head coach of the Mens Basketball team. In an earlier article, it was mentioned that Shurina might be fired due to the poor season and overall career record he has had, but the only hitch would be the $100,000 left on his contract. Athletic Director Chip Smith took care of both problems on Thursday, April 14 by reassigning Shurina as a teacher. Shurina will no doubt be among the highest paid teachers here, but at least the university is not taking a total loss. The fact is that Shurina could not cut it as head coach, and after a 48-97 record in five years it was time to move on. Finishing 8-22 this year topped off everything, and while Shurina did produce NBA 1st round pick Kevin _ Martin he has little else to show for since his hiring in 2000. Even with Martin in the lineup, Shurinas Cats only finished 13-15. The record on Shurina isnt all bad, though. While he did a poor job as coach, he was an excellent recruiter. As mentioned earlier, he recruited Kevin Martin, but he also brought in a talented class this year with Trey Hopkins, Antonio Russell and Negus _ McKenna. He also recruited David _ Berghoefer, Corey Muirhead, Kyle Greathouse and Rans_ Brempong. Shurina has an acute eye for talent, and while he was not that great of a coach, he cannot be knocked for his recruiting. Smith has said that he would try to fill the coaching position as quickly as necessary. While many Western students are happy with the change in coaches, the poor timing will really hurt the university in searching for a new coach. The best two coaches that might have been available for WCU, Buzz Peterson and Matt Doherty, have both committed to schools within the last week. Former Tennessee Coach Buzz Peterson, a native of Asheville, decided to coach Coastal Carolina. While Myrtle Beach is no doubt enticing, it would not have been hard to sell Peterson on coming back home. Unfortunately, Peterson committed a couple of days before the announcement. As for Doherty, he accepted a job at Florida Atlantic. The sunshine in Florida is also no doubt enticing but WCU could have made a strong pitch considering Doherty graduated from UNC and has spent nearly a decade of his life living in North Carolina. Doherty accepted Florida Atlantics coaching job a few days after the announcement. So who does that leave as candidates for the job? If the university doesnt want to look very far then it might promote Anquell McCollum. While McCollum is very short on coaching experience, he is a legend in Catamount basketball history. McCollum was the star of the 1996 Cats that made the NCAA Tournament and almost upset #1 seed Purdue. After playing overseas, McCollum returned to the university this year as an assistant coach. McCollum has taken the job of spokesperson it seems as his infectious smile and lively attitude are hard to miss on campus. McCollum even gave a speech at Midnight Madness and would bring a refreshing attitude to the program. His experience is probably the only thing holding him back from the job. In a down year for available coaches, McCollum is the only name that really comes to mind. The athletic department will no doubt do a thorough search, though, and hopefully come up with an excellent coaching hire. An option besides McCollum would be to find an assistant at a prestigious college or an assistant with SoCon ties. Of course, WCU tried this with Shurina and it didnt work out. Shurina was an assistant at Davidson and at Vanderbilt before becoming head coach. This might be the last option for the program after the Shurina tenure. Western could also go the route of hiring a top notch head coach from Division II or III. While Division | basketball is no doubt different from Division II, coaching is coaching and most coaches who are good on one level are good at another. Jim Tressel won multiple Division || National Championships while coaching at Youngstown State, and it didnt take him long to win one at Ohio State after moving up. A basketball example would be Coach Bo Ryan of Wisconsin. Ryan coached fifteen years at UW-Platteville and won four national championships and had a .895 winning percentage. After taking over the University of Wisconsin, Ryan has transformed the Badgers into one of the best programs in Division | hoops. This could be the best route for the Catamounts to take as there are many quality head coaches in the Division II and Ill levels with good experience who have proven themselves. In any case, a new era of Catamount basketball will begin next year, and only time will tell if the Athletic Department made the right hire. As far as the students who played for Shurina, freshman shooting guard Eric Wilson says that Shurina was a great coach and he will be missed. | feel that the whole situation is very unfortunate, not only for Coach Shurina but for the rest of his family. The coaching staff not only did a great job coaching us on the basketball court, but they also did a great job molding us into quality young men. Shurina gave me an opportunity to play basketball and | am very grateful to him and the rest of the staff for that. | wish him and the rest of the staff the best of luck in the future. Wilson feels that someone needs to come in and turn the program around. We need someone who can revamp the program and who can lead us to the next level. The fans in the community need something to be proud of and we owe it to them. We just need someone who will jumpstart our program and make us a contender. Steve Shurina held a meeting at his house shortly after the news of his reassignment got out. Freshman forward Negus McKenna says that the meeting was really emotional. His daughter and wife were crying and the whole team seemed to be in a state of shock about coach being let go. McKenna felt as though everything happened too fast. I was doing workouts with the coaches and all of a sudden Shurina gets told to meet with Chip Smith and is told he is being let go. Everything just happened so suddenly. "All in all, we are all sad that we had to go through this, especially us freshman. However, everything is in the past and now we have to move on, said McKenna. Freshman point guard Trey Hopkins hopes that Western can bring in a good coach with a decent resume. Hopefully, the new coach will be someone who is good and can easily relate to the players. | do feel bad for Shurina. He was a great coach, but coaching is a tough business. We want to win and be contenders and the school felt that a coaching change would be the right move for that. Only time can tell who the next mens basketball coach will be. W C U ICATAMOUNTS
