Ki-Ki (above) and Pellom (Below) displayed superior skills over Georgia Southern in the championship game. photos by Mark Haskett WCnewsmagazine 17 Double OT by Andy Gambill * WCnewsmagazine With the season on the line, Jennifer Gard- ner came through with her best game ever to push the Lady Catamounts to a double over- time victory over fifth seed Georgia Southern. The SoCon Championship game was an in- stant classic, as Gardner poured in a career high 45 points to propel the Cats to the 97-95 win. The game was filled with moments of ex- citement and anxiety. With only 17 seconds left in regulation, guard Tiffany Brown hit a _ fade-away jumper to give Georgia Southern an 81-79 lead. Western responded right back, * though, as senior point guard Ki-Ki Glass hit a floater from the side. Glass was fouled but missed the free throw. After scrambling for the rebound, Western grabbed the loose ball. Unfortunately, Gardner could not control the inbounds pass so the score would be 81-81 as the two teams headed into overtime. In overtime, Georgia Southern jumped out of the gates and grabbed an 88-83 lead. The Lady Cats wouldn't die, though, as freshman guard Ashley Pellom hit one of two free throws to cut the lead to 88-84. Georgia Southern grabbed the rebound on the miss, but Pellom stole the ball back and got it to Gardner for an easy bucket. With the lead cut down to two, Western got the ball back on a Golden Eagle turnover. The ball once again found its way into Gardners hands, but she was fouled. Gardner, one of the best free throw shooters in school history, drained both free throws to tie the game at 88. Both teams played lock- down defense for the rest of the period and sent the game into a second overtime. The second overtime was the true definition of drama. The lead would go back and forth until Fallon Lee hit a jumper from the side to give Georgia Southern the lead 95-94. The Lady Cats just responded the same way they have all season: they threw the ball inside to Jennifer Gardner. Gardner bullied her way for two more points to give Western a 96-95 lead with 16 seconds left in the game. After add- ing another free throw, the Lady Cats held a | 97-95 lead. With one last chance, Georgia | Southerns Dana Benemon missed a three pointer from the left corner to end the game. The Southern Conference Champion Lady Catamounts were led by the amazing perfor- mance of Jennifer Gardner. The All-SoCon first-team selection, Gardner put up a game that would make even Shaquille ONeal jeal- ous. Gardner finished the championship game with 45 points and 13 rebounds. She shot 15 of 19 from the field, including 2 of 3 from three-point range and 13 of 15 from the free throw line. Gardner displayed unstop- pable strength and determination in the post and dominated the Georgia Southern front- line. Gardner also had help from Seniors Lori Tanner and Sigita Maleraite. Tanner posted 16 points in only 21 minutes of action, as she eventually fouled out of the game. Mal- eraite chipped in 10 points and came up with 2 steals during the game. Freshman sensa- tion Chevon Keith continued what had been a phenomenal SoCon tourney debut by com- ing off the bench to contribute 9 points, 8 rebounds and 2 steals. Ki-Ki Glass showed why she has started every game as point guard this year by dishing out 14 assists to only 2 turnovers. Glass also posted 7 points and 2 steals. The Lady Cats also had some good defensive performances off the bench with Ashley Pellom grabbing 2 steals and Teyawna Hardy blocking 2 shots. The Golden Eagles were led in the de- feat by Tiffany Brown and Dana Benemon. Brown finished the night with 27 points, 6 re- | bounds and 4 assists while Benemon came | away with 22 points and 8 rebounds. Also in double figures for Georgia Southern was Lee | Dubose with 14 points. She also pulled down | 8 rebounds. : The Lady Cats demolished a multitude of records in the game. Gardner smashed many : of the records. She set the SoCon tournament | records for most points in a single game (45), | points in a tournament (106), field goals ina tournament (33), free throws in a tournament (37), free throw attempts in a tournament (46) and rebounds in a tournament (43). As a team, WCU became the first team to ever play four games en route to winning the So- Con Championship. The Lady Cats were just the second team to ever win the SoCon from the sixth seed, the other being the 1999 ASU team. Kellie Harper became the first coach to ever lead a team to the SoCon champi- onship in their first season. With 18 victories, Harper also became the winningest first-year coach in Catamount history. Ki-Ki Glass also broke the ultimate records for a point guard by handing out a career best 14 assists in the championship game en route to the record for total assists in a tournament with 28. For their record breaking performance, the Lady Cats placed four players on the All-Tourna- ment teams. Seniors Gardner and Lori Tan- ner were both first team All-Tournament, while Sigita Maleraite and freshman Chevon Keith were second team All-Tournament se- lections. Gardner received the Tournament Outstanding Player award for her Shaquille ONeal-like tournament performance.
