  • prog ress py Traci White Wenewsmagazine The unfortunate reputation | established at Western as a terrible and dangerous cook hid itself in my carry-on luggage. Thanks to the vigilance of my Spanish hall mate Esther, our dorm (envision a warehouse with beds in it) has twice been saved from near destruction in my hands. Not only have | opened the gas valves on the stove full throttle not realizing they were indeed gas, | placed a pot of spaghetti an iron pot in the microwave on top of the refrigerator. Esther noticed a massive spark behind my head in the middle of the conversation we were having and her eyes grew huge as she, panicking, screamed at me to take it out immediately. While my attempts to blow up the container had been thwarted, | did succeed in splattering pizza sauce on several skittish French girls when the Hawaiian one | was trying to bake in the microwave fell to the floor. Food in general here is an adventure, even if | am nowhere near an appliance. The mainstays of Dutch cuisine are gouda cheese, mayonnaise, and all things fried. However, they dont fry items Americans might expect, like vegetables or meat with identifiable animal origins. Nope they fry gravy. They fry this protein-like material that most closely resembles soggy bread. | think | ate a fried glob of chicken and dumplings once. | have yet to encounter fried mayonnaise, but boy do they ever slather it all over everything. Thankfully it is actually edible here, seeing as it is the national condiment. To get your hands on ketchup, you must submit a special written request and be willing to pay at least 30 cents for a pack. Despite the obvious healthfulness of Dutch meals, the Dutch are creatures that manage to look and sound like graceful blond aliens, with the average height somewhere near seven feet. | attribute this vitality to the thousands of bicycles, navigated by amazingly tall women in short skirts and ankle-high boots, that weave around the bicycie-sized European cars on the road. Bikes are the preferred mode of transportation (although my ever-sore sit bones and high heels that always get stuck in the pedals would rather take the bus) and have all the sine in traffic that eutornoblies , | have dented bumper). wns eraciiadltoet | woud be able to come across as believably Dutch, but the fact that | am lucky if | reach the kneecaps of a native Groningen-er not only proves my foreign status but furthermore makes the cold water faucet - placed around the six foot mark in the shower - impossible to reach. Subsequently, | have mastered the fine art of thirty second showers. The most accurate description | have heard of the Dutch language is a drunken English sailor who believes he can speak German, contributed by another _ international (pizza sauce-free) student from France. Having been here a month, | can confidently say that | have no better idea what anyone is saying in the phlegmatic whispers of their pronunciation than | did when my plane landed inAmsterdam. Here in the containers, all the international students speak stilted English and share a mutual inability to decipher Dutch. When we aren't eloquently debating the pros and cons of our respective home countries, my hall mates (hailing from as far a-field as Indonesia and South Africa and as local as Belgium and Germany) have indoor snowball fights, drunken bicycle rides back to our dorm at 3 a.m. (from one of 160 bars, pubs, clubs, and koffee shoppes, some of which have revolving floors and labyrinth-like layouts to confuse the savviest lush) and the occasional joint in the middle of the living room. Despite the American fear of marijuanas wickedness, there are very few people raised in such a tolerant society who become addicts in their adult lives. On a similar note, | contribute the acceptance of the substance to the utter absurdity of nearly every Dutch commercial broadcast on television, especially those advertising ting tones with animated spokes-characters. Cell phone technology here is amazingly improved over that in the States: reception is based on satellites and therefore no one is ever out of range. Every single popular song has already been turned into a midi version ready for the cell phone invariably in every Dutch pocket. Admittedly, | have spent nearly as much time of my semester so far outside of the Netherlands as | have within them. | only have classes three days a week since the professors hold their lectures once weekly and | am left with the majority of Friday, the entire weekend, plus Monday and Tuesday to travel. So far, | have seen Prague, Brno, _ Frankfurt, Dresden, Paris, Rome, Florence and Montecatini with plans for a train and a cruise through the Rhine Valley and the rest of Germany, a return to Paris for spring _ break, several journeys to Amsterdam, | a week in London and hopes of visiting ireland. For now, however, | am thoroughly | enjoying my blond bicycling city and all of its idiosyncrasies. WCnewsmagazine ships in London by Kelli E. McNair WCnewsmagazine For the first year, International Programs and Services (IPS) presented internship opportunities in London, England. The program allowed students to relocate to London for six weeks for an unpaid internship and was within all majors. The program resulted from a partnership with the Center for Academic Programs Abroad, a non-profit organization that pro- vides students and faculty with quality overseas study programs. The partnership includes Appalachian State University, UNC- Asheville, UNC-Charlotte, UNC-Greensboro and WCU. CAPA has relationships with 5,000 different companies in Lon- don. CAPA is designed to integrate students into a local organiza- tion in an international business and cultural context. The organization provides apartment housing with a kitchen for students to cook their own meals. There are three to four students to an apartment. All interested students received an application and handbook full of guidelines to follow in order to achieve upon arriving to Lon- don. A budget sheet was also provided for the students. The budget included CAPA fees (housing, health insurance and job placement), the flight, meals, IPS administrative costs, in-country expenses, passport and tuition. Tuition expenses depend on whether the student is earning three or six credits for the program. Even though scholarships are not currently offered through IPS, the goal in the future is to have them available to those stu- dents who would need the financial help, said Dr. Lois Petrovich- Mwaniki, Director of IPS. All prospective interns will be placed in Greater London, or within a reasonable distance where they will go through another orientation and interviews. According to the IPS website, these internships will provide students with the opportunity to enhance their skills and career prospects while making an active contribu- tion to the company in which they are placed. After students have obtained their applications, they will then go to Career Services to receive help in writing a general cover letter and resume, completing the application and then attend an orientation at WCU concerning safety issues and culture shock. In addition, in order to receive credit, students must sign up as either a co-op or an intern. Students must have a 2.5 GPA or higher, two references, a transcript, a valid passport and forms filled out with the necessary student information in order to intern. Also, they must consult with the Financial Aid Office. When students have completed the essentials, those who are accepted will depart for London on May 14 and arrive May 15. Students then attend another orientation concerning culture and working in London, are interviewed by an interested company, and upon having a satisfactory interview, will work at that company for six weeks. However, should a student not receive an internship from the company he/she interviewed with, CAPA will discuss alternative options. If an alternative is not found, the student will then have to depart for home. On the weekends, students will have opportunities to travel to surrounding cities by air for cheap rates as low as $10 or $15. Before London, internships were also offered in Mexico, Aus- tralia and New Zealand through another program, and they lasted for a semester. New program allows intern- F 9
