  • 26 WCnewsmagazine Greathouse paces Catamounts with 18 points in 71-67 victory over Elon by Andy Gambill * WCnewsmagazine What was already a bad season only got worse for Elon on Saturday night, Jan. 29. Elon, which was 2-18 overall and 0-7 in the SoCon, left Cullowhee with yet another loss to add to their record, courtesy of a superb long-range shooting performance by sophomore Kyle Greathouse. Maybe Elons players can take pride in the fact that they never quit in the game. After leading by four at halftime, Western was able to push the lead to 65-53 with less than 8 minutes left in the game before a frantic finish by the Phoenix cut the lead to 69-67 with less than a minute to go. What was a close and heated game at the time became even hotter before the end with what almost amounted to a brawl between WCUs Jared Outing and Elons Scottie Rice. After a Negus McKenna free throw pushed the lead back to 70-67, the Phoenix came down the court looking to free up the games leading scorer, Rice, for a three pointer, but the Cats were able to smother Rice around the three-point line. With time running out, Rice drove the lane but was called for an offensive foul after Junior Outing stepped in between Rice and the basket. A pumped-up Outing started celebrating the game-saving charge with a little trash-talk, but instead of getting up and moving on, Rice took a swing at Outing from the ground, which caused both squads to come over and join the fracas. Fortunately, the referees were able to break up the melee before any visible punches could be landed. With the win Western improved to 7-14 overall and 2-6 in the Southern Conference. This was the second win in a row for the Catamount men and hopefully will signal a strong finish heading into the Conference tournament in Chattanooga, Tennessee on March 2. For the Catamount men, Greathouse led the way with his great outside shooting as stated earlier. Greathouse finished with 18 points and went 5-6 from three-point range. Junior David Berghoefer also came up big against Elon finishing with 22 points and 16 rebounds. The Catamounts also received another superb performance by Freshman Trey Hopkins. Hopkins did not shoot well in the game but still finished with 11 points and showed extremely smooth control over the point guard position. Trey had four steals, one block and dished out 8 assists while only turning the ball over once in what was an excellent Jason Kidd impression. For Elon, the aforementioned Rice led the way with 29 points off the bench. Rice shot 8-13 from the field, 4-7 from three range and 9 of 10 from the free throw line. Elon guard Brian Waters added 10 points and 6 rebounds for the Phoenix in the loss. After starting off the second half with a 33-29 lead, the Catamount men pulled ahead 36-29 with a Trey Hopkins three-pointer before Elon went on a quick four-point run to pull the game back within three. The Catamounts quickly answered back with an 11-2 run that included baskets by Hopkins, Greathouse and Berghoefer. The run also included what was easily the play of the game when Hopkins threw a no-look pass down low to a wide-open Antonio Russell for a lay-up. The future of WCU basketball is obviously in good hands with the superb play shown all season by Freshmen Hopkins and Russell. After a timeout, Phoenix guard Brian Waters was fouled but missed both free throws. LeVonn Jordan pulled down what would be one of his 8 rebounds of the night for the Phoenix but was rejected on the put-back by the Southern Conference All-Time leading shot blocker Rans Brempong. The Phoenix kept fighting, though, and went on a quick 5-0 run to pull the game back within grasp at 44-40 before Berghoefer ended the run with a lay-up inside. After a couple of minutes that saw the Cats take a 55-44 lead, David Berghoefer received a pass down low but was slammed to the ground by Jordan. Jordan was called for a flagrant foul but Berghoefer missed both free throws. After a 6-2 Elon run cut the lead to 57-50, Hopkins stole a pass and jetted down the court for a lay-up but was fouled and missed the attempt. Hopkins hit both free throws, though, and kept the Cats playing a step above the Phoenix until the 3:31 mark. After a timeout with 3:31 to go the Phoenix went on an 11-4 run that cut the lead to 69-67 before falling short at the end. While Elon finished the game strong, had it not been for the strong finish by WCU in the first half, the Phoenix might have won the game. Down 27- 29 with 1:17 left the Cats finished the half with a 6-0 run that included two baskets by Berghoefer and two free throws by Hopkins. The final basket by Berghoefer came on lob from out of bounds with 0.2 left on the clock. Elon had really played hard before that point to gain the lead. After falling behind 3-0 at the beginning of the game the Phoenix tied the game at 3-3 with a jumper by Michael Brandon. After a couple of minutes of back and forth basketball, the Phoenix surged ahead 16-10 before WCU went on an 8-1 run using five points by Jared Outing on the run to take the lead back. The game was extremely close over the next five minutes to set up the 29-27 lead by the Phoenix before the 6-0 run by Western that closed off the first half. Western will travel to Furman on Monday, Jan.31, while Elon goes back home to face UNC Greensboro on Monday.
