  • 10 The Peak debut rocks Illusions by Jennifer Scism | WCnewsmagazine newsmagazine The Peak, a live Hip-Hop show created by students for the purpose of bringing live music to Western, made its debut Thursday, August 26. Despite the broken air conditioner, the free show seemed to be a hit, as hundreds of students piled into Illusions. The audience was entertained by many acts that included students from Western and surrounding areas. A freestyle battle kicked off the show. Students were welcomed to participate in the competition. It was an open contest and got quite a positive reaction from the crowd. Artists from Gastonia, North Carolina followed along with Shore Shot from New Jersey. Shore Shot performed a solo song and also performed in a duet with SE7EN entitled How Many Tracks? This duet is featured on Mic Confexshuns, SE7ENs latest demo release. Shamus Coneys also was a featured artist at The Peak. His neo-style rocked the mic with a new breed of Hip-Hop with which many people were unfamiliar. His new flavor added a touch of style that was different from anything heard by the audience before. Not only were the lyrics his own, but the beats behind the words are his creations as well. Lu & co LL 4 = te = LLL ra nd The headliner artist for the first show was Matthew Ash aka SE7EN. He performed four songs from his newly released demo and shocked the crowd with his energy and talent. SE7EN says that this was only the beginning, kind of like a trial version of what is to come. Students can expect to see a more developed and organized show based on a lot of live performances and a lot of local talent. He also wants the student body to know that they are the ones who bring the life to The Peak. The only way we will be able to continue to bring Hip-Hop to Western is if the students demand it and if they attend the shows. Without them, we cannot continue this monthly event. Who knew there was so much Hip-Hop talent in Cullowhee? The next show is scheduled for September 23". Stay tuned for more details on times and locations. Broadway artist to perform at WCU This fall the music theater program is inviting the Broadway artist Bradley Dean to campus. Bradley most recently appeared in the 2003 Broadway revival of Man of La Mancha, playing the part of Anselmo and serving as understudy to the Broadway legend Brian Stokes Mitchell. Before this he played the role of Rochester in Jane Eyre and he can be heard on the cast recordings of both shows. In addition, he was a member of the international touring company of the Rocky Horror Picture Show playing the part of Frank n Furter in fifteen countries. After coming to West- ern, Bradley will appear with the national touring company of Evita under the direc- tion of Hal Prince. Mr. Dean will be giving a concert at Western in the recital hall in the Coulter Building on September 14 at 8:00 p.m. He will also present a public master class in the same venue on September 13 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Both of these events will be free of charge and open to the public.
