Hinds University Center, the building that serves as the hub of student social life at Western. _ Ceremonies marking the completion of the $6.8 million project were held at 3 p.m. Monday, Jan. 12, in the newly expanded facility, under construction since April 2001. Instead of the typical ribbon-cutting ceremony, we will have a ribbon-tying ceremony symbolizing how the University Center connects the entire campus commu- nity, said Julie Walters-Steele, University Center director. After the ribbon-tying ceremony, representatives of student organizations housed in the new section of the building will receive keys to their new offices, and visitors will be able to tour the new facility. The expansion features a two-story atrium lobby and lounge area, 160-seat multipurpose meeting room, 170- seat auditorium for movies and lectures, student mail center with more than 4,000 mail boxes, 3,500 square feet of retail space, and expanded foot court. Also in the new section are a multicultural center, womens center, and offices for 16 student clubs and organizations with work space and conference rooms. The project, financed through a self-liquidating bond issue funded through student fees, follows a $4 million renovation effort completed in 1997 that modernized the original 62,000-square-foot building. Built in 1968, the University Center is named in honor of the late Anthony Keith Hinds, former dean and professor of mathematics at Western. Numerous other activities are planned as part of grand opening week, including movies in the new theater, performances of drama and music, games, and art exhibits. For more information, call the Hinds University Center administrative office at (828) 227-7206.
