Dr. Warner Publishes 'Winning Ways' by Alex Esmon Managing Editor Teachers need all the help they can get and Western's own Dr. Mary Warner is trying to do just that—help. Winning Ways of Coaching Writing: A Practical Guide to Teaching Writing Grades Six ThroughH is Dr. Warner's latest publication and the goal of the book is to help teachers from grades 6 to 12 teach students the fine points of writing and composition. "Before the late 1980's, very few teachers received training in this area. Many students went into teaching without ever taking a separate writing class," says Dr. Warner. She is hopeful that the new manual will help teachers-in-training as well as teachers who have been in the profession for a long time how to better meet the needs of students. 'The book has a dual design, that is I hope it is effective for both people already teaching and for those who are just starting," said Dr. Warner. But as one would expect from Dr. Warner, she is quick to share the accolades from her book. In fact, the manual was written with the input of teachers from across the nation— "For teachers by teachers," as Dr. Warner likes to say. "I didn't write the whole thing," she says with a slight touch of pride. "It's important that Dr. Mark Honneger be recognized for his part. He wrote chapters two and four." Dr. Honneger, also a professor of English at WCU, wrote a chapter on grammar and a chapter on English as a second language (ESL). "These are areas that many teachers in training are poorly informed about, unless they specifically focus on them with extra classes," he said. Dr. Warner's manual has many useful features for teachers. From current guides on how to manage websites and evaluate them to the most current information on topics surrounding state mandated tests, Winning Ways is a virtual must for anyone going into the realm of middle or high school teaching. "The goal of the book is to help teachers teach writing—I want to coach. We can never really teach people how to write but we can coach. That's the reason the book is called 'Winning Ways of Coaching Writing'," said Dr. Warner Also important for teachers are the chapters that deal with how to teach writing to ESL students, students with ADHD, or advanced ninth graders. Dr. Warner couldn't be more pleased with the reception the book is getting from teachers and former students alike. The feeling is that the book is "really needed" in an area that previously has lacked any guidance for teachers. Dr. Warner is in her fifth year at WCU as head of the Student Teaching Program in the English Department. Winning Ways is now available on amazon.com.
