  • 16 WESTERN CAROLINIAN SPORTS September 13, 2000 A Hard Day's Knight, Bazzzzzzballl, WCU Soccer by David Bartholomew Asst. Sports Editor Bobby Knight, men's head basketball coach at Indiana, was fired Sunday. After years of accusations of violence with students, Knight refused to get help and became a public relations nightmare for the university. It's probably the best thing to happen to University of Indiana basketball program since Coach Knight began his coaching career. Bob Knight was and is Indiana basketball. He's done more for the university and the basketball program than anyone. He's arguably done more for the state of Indiana than any politician. "The General" will be missed in Hoosier-land. That said, Indiana made the right move, for their basketball program anyway. The bottom line in basketball is winning, and sadly the many first round exits in the NCAA tournament may have started the end for Knight. I don't believe Bobby Knight coached or acted differently than he did while winning national championships with Isiah Thomas and Steve Alford. The General has a temper. It is part of the fire that helped Knight become one of the greatest teachers of all time. Only now is that not good enough. If Indiana wins instead of Michigan State in April, this stuff about grabbing an arm of a student never makes it out. But because IU basketball has struggled, Knight was expendable. Yankees, Braves, Mets, Indians ... zzzzzzz Every year the same teams enter September with playoff spots locked up. Sure an occasional Chicago or San Francisco (read small market) will rise up and defeat the big market teams...in the regular season anyway. There is no doubt in my mind these upstarts are mere playoff fodder for the old guard. Without a salary cap, Milwaukee won't play in a World Series. The only thing that changes in baseball is the roster of these big-market teams. They create so much revenue that trading for starting pitching is not a dilemma. Baseball has some exciting races to follow this month. Unfortunately the races are primaries, and we all know who will be running in October. WCU Soccer A Force Already? Don't get too excited yet, but the Lady Catamount soccer team looks explosive. The new look offense is much faster and scoring opportunities are much more prevalent than in 1999. The offensive firepower will keep the Lady Cats in almost every game. I look for the team to surprise and knock off or tie a Davidson or Furman. That's a whole lot to ask of a second year soccer program. Coach Debbie Hensley has a much deeper squad and Western Carolina soccer will surprise. If that's not enough, just envision the soccer program two years from now. The roster is all freshmen and sophomores. You Know Football Has Started when... It's the biggest game in the SEC East. Florida travels to Knoxville this Saturday to take on the Volunteers. Neither team has impressed so far. I look for the team who comes up with a big turnover to win. That team will be Tennessee. NFL Week 3 I like Carolina, this year. Seifort has the defense playing at a high level. If the secondary holds up, Carolina is playoff bound. Regardless the Panthers will roll past the Falcons in their first home game. Tampa Bay will score less points but win in Detroit, and the Packers will lose their third in a row as the Eagles get back on track. St. Louis and Jacksonville will win really big. Buffalo and the New York play for first place in the AFC East. I like the Bills on the road, even though Vinny has performed in the clutch for the Jets. Denver will beat da Raiders in what should be a classic battle. The G-men will run over da Bears. Kansas City will get a much-deserved win over San Diego. Seattle will get by New Orleans. My upset pick is for the Patriots to beat the Vikings. Ty Law and Lawyer Milloy should slow down the Vikes enough. Drew Bledsoe should throw for big yardage against Minnesota's d-backs. Cleveland will beat Pittsburgh. Baltimore will beat Miami. The Skins will finally show their "A" game and blow out Dallas on a Monday night national stage. JOIN A WINNING TEAM!
