NC Into Hotline {»«•) tSt-StlS Edwards Joins Senators in Initiating Charge on College Sports Betting by Michael Lewis Staff Writer Much attention has been shown lately towards an ugly side of collegiate sports: point-shaving has been the topic of many a Sportscenter feature lately. Perhaps these incidents may be few and far between if some U.S. Senators have their way. In February of this year, United States Senator John Edwards, from North Carolina, co-sponsored a bill along with Senators Brownback, Helms, and McCain which would prohibit sports betting on any college, high school, or Olympic sport of any kind: The High School and College Sports Gambling Prohibition Act. The details were explained in a release from Senator Edwards office in a March press release entitled, "College Sports: Don't Bet On It." In the release, Edwards denounced college sports betting, going on to quote a study conducted by the National Gambling Impact Study Commission, which stated, "betting on collegiate and amateur athletic events that is currently legal be banned altogether." The legislation has garnered the support of many influential figures in college basketball, the most notable being Dean Smith, former coach of the University of North Carolina Tarheels Basketball team, Bill Guthridge, current coach of the Tarheels, and Mike Krzyzewski-coach of the Duke University Blue Devils Basketball team. Also, many collegiate sports conferences have openly supported the bill. Big South Conference Commissioner Kyle Kallander has also submitted written support of the bill. Steve Shutt, Director of Public Affairs for the Southern Conference, of which Western Carolina is a member, responded to the bill positively. "Of course we're for it," Shutt said, and went on to say that the Southern Conference was "sure all NCAA member conferences would be in support of such legislation passing." Michael Briggs, Press Secretary for Senator Edwards, said that the legislation was really benefiting from the help of Senator John McCain, who came on board, feeling that the bill was important piece of legislation. Briggs went to say that the bill was now in Senator McCain's Commerce Committee instead of the Judiciary Committee, where the legislation would have traditionally been sent. Briggs said Edwards's office was hopeful the bill would reach the Senate floor through McCain's committee. Briggs also pointed to a statement from Senator Edwards cited in his release-the fact that Nevada has made it illegal for anyone to bet on "teams from universities in their own state," going on to say that Nevada politicians realize the problems legal betting on collegiate sports in their own state can cause. Edwards stated in his release that the bill was not meant to "cripple the gaming industry," but to, "protect the student athlete and the integrity of college athletics." www.croMfoadVsylvo.tom for update* phone 631-3322 Main Street, Sylva Dining and Entertainment Karaoke w/Teri"TeHokc8 Davis 9;00pm Sl.OOm^ SIMUii a p«ulty $* *>J «/ DJ W«UEED finger/songwriter fs|iglit ?*«** Jimmy Lanflxy *j 2ir(rW*$2JX) Gen.Un.nSadnm Fri.
