Brown Staff Writer Six years ago, in the shade of Western North Carolina's lush hills, five talented musicians were sown. These musicians have grown to produce the secret ingredients for one of Cullowhee's finest musical recipes, Oliver's Soup. The 'Soup' consists of vocalist Ted Lizee on guitar, vocalist Chris "Crip Dog" Davis on keyboards and trombone, Tommy Dennison on guitar, Jacob Keller on bass guitar, and, the hardest workingman in Western North Carolina, Eric Mrozkowski on the drum kit. This line up has remained constant for some time now. The 'Soup' overflows with juicy bits of jazz, hip-hop, rock, ska, and Latin influence. In recent months, a harder alternative flavor has been selectively implemented to accommodate the band's musical progression. Once blended with a heaping helping of creativity, Oliver's Soup is ready to serve. When describing the ins and outs of Oliver's Soup, Ted Lizee stated, "We make music that is appealing to a diverse crowd. Our wide range of musical influence allows us to create a sound that is pleasing to listeners of many tastes—The 'Soup' invites everyone to come out, dance and have good time." Oliver's Soup opened for Jupiter Coyote a few months ago at Crossroads, and I was a witness to their performance. Being the opening act they were restricted to a scaled down set with no keyboards. They toiled through this adversity and really pulled it off. Even with limited resources they managed to put together a performance worth remembering. Their set was comprised of about 80 percent original material and 20 percent cover songs. Their original songs are filled with thoughtful lyrics and professional arrangements that rival anything you'll hear on Z9l. The influence of Sublime, Phish, 311, Stevie Wonder, and many others resonated throughout their songs. Their selection of cover tunes displays their knowledge of music and the extent of their musical influences. "Torn and Frayed" by the Rolling Stones and Steely Dan's "Any Major Dude" were absolute treats. Many bands cover only obvious and over-played tunes such as "Sweet Home Alabama." The excavation of such obscure, but tremendous songs is a credit to the band's musical prowess. Although abbreviated, the show demonstrated the bands ability to manipulate an audience's attention while delivering a positive, high-energy performance. In addition to Oliver's Soup, band members Ted and Eric are involved in an assortment of various musical adventures. Ted Lizee is currently working with the bluegrass styled Smokey Mountain Ramblers, while Eric Mrozkowski is involved with the eclectic collectives K-Bots and Smokey Mountain Drum and Bass. I recommend that everyone take the time to be inspired by Oliver's Soup. To conclude his feelings on Oliver's Soup Ted Lizee quipped, "After your first taste of the 'Soup' you'll be heading back for more." Chris Davis and Ted Lizee; two of Oliver's Soup's key ingredients will perform together this Thursday night March 30 in an intimate setting at the Blue Squirrel Cafe.
