  • 18 WESTERN CAROLINIAN SPORTS February 23, 2000 Cats Did What App. State Couldn't by Daniel Hooker Sports Editor The Western Carolina Catamounts put four in double-figures and did something that the Boone Goons couldn't - completed the seasonal sweep of the VMI Keydets. VMI 71 The 88-71 victory WCU 88 Saturday night in front of 1,530 in the Ramsey Center gave WCU two-wins over the Keydets this year. Head coach Phil Hopkins said, "It was a good team effort tonight. Our guys played really unselfish. This was a game that good teams win." He added, "We did a better job guarding their threes tonight [in comparison to the game in Lexington, Va.]." Senior Dondrell Whitmore led the four Western Carolina players in double-figures. The Fayetteville, NC, native recorded his 26th career double-double, eighth on the season, by turning in a 20-point, 11- rebound performance. That performance also made Whitmore one of 24 different Catamounts to score over 1,100 points in their career. Freshman twin-tandem of Jarvis and CATS POUND RAIDERS Continued from back scored. On the offensive outburst by the Cats, Charles Thomas said, "We just took a better approach [at the plate]. We've had the potential to do this every game, its just a matter of going out and doing it." In the first game of the series, WCU found itself on the short end of a 10-1 score in the bottom of the fifth inning. However, after four runs in that fifth, with four more in the eighth, split by one in the sixth, the Catamounts were able to tie the game up at 10. The ninth inning was full of excitement, with WSU taking the 11-10 lead off a lead-off solo Raider homerun. However, Goldston stepped to the plate with two men on nobody out and belted a three-run homer to right field to win the game, WCU's first of the year. Goldston finished two of six with the three RBIs. Raleigh explained, "We never felt like we were out of it. Our bats gave us some confidence." In a game where Catamount pitching was roughed up early, with starter Aaron Kirby being chased after two and a third, relievers Brad House and Wes Bentley came in for six innings combined action, surrendering four runs on four hits together. Bentley got the win (1-0) for WCU. Jonas Hayes combined for 29 of WCU's 88, 19 and 10 respectively. Jarvis also finished with six rebounds and three assists, while Jonas had five boards and a pair of steals. It was the 13th consecutive game in which Jarvis had reached double-figures, as well as improved WCU's record to 7-0 when both Hayes brothers score in double- figures. Sophomore forward Cory Largent was the fourth Cat to reach double-digits, finishing with 10 on four of nine shooting. He added four assists and a pair of steals. His high school teammate, point-guard Casey Rogers, was one point shy of double- figures, finishing with nine. However, he did record 11 assists in the winning effort. Rogers moved into eighth place in the WCU record books for career assists. He currently has 335. "Dondrell and Jonas really got it going in the second half," said Hopkins. "We got some mismatches [on VMI] and Casey read it and was able to find them." VMI also put four players into double- figures, led by junior Richard Bruce. The Cats return to action Thursday afternoon as they travel to Athens to take on the Bulldogs of Georgia. They return home to Cullowhee this weekend for a conference series with the Keydets of VMI. The first-pitch of Saturday's double- header is scheduled for noon, with Sunday's finale starting at 1 pm at Childress Field. ing the Keydets. The Keydets have five players 6'8" or taller on their lineup. This fact had Hopkins and the Cats worried. "Coming in, I was really concerned about VMI's offensive rebounding. They are a well coached team and they play really hard," stated Hopkins. The Cats won the proverbial battle on the boards, out rebounding the Keydets 44-29. After a horrid opening, which saw the Keydets jump out to a 15-4 lead over the Catamounts, WCU got back on track, rallying back to tie the game up at 24 with six minutes left before the half. Western Carolina took a two- point, 37-35 lead into the break. After the first official timeout of the second half, with WCU leading 50-45, the Cats went on a 12-0 run that spanned four and a half minutes, pushing the advantage to 67-45.
