  • February 23, 2000 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR WESTERN CAROLINIAN Reader 'Holds Anger' at University Police Follow the Founders with Buchanan and Keyes Dear Editor, Going to college for the first time is a very scary experience for students and we should feel safe. Students should not have to worry about anyone violating their belongings due to the fact that not only does Western Carolina University have security but on-campus police working around the clock. This year WCU has had many reports on vandalism to cars in the parking lots, many in the freshman parking lots only. I am a student here, and I know how the other students feel, because earlier in the semester, my car is one of the many that got broken into. A few examples are broken windows, slit tires, missing antennas, and stolen stereos. Many students, including me, have reported these break-ins, but only to hear that "We will try harder to secure the freshman lots" by the security police. This is not fair to the students but the parents also. One of the reasons that students come to this school is because of the reports of the low crime rate. This holds true to a certain degree, although there have been numerous calls and reports on car vandalism. Many letters and reports show that most of these break-ins came from the freshman parking lots. In the case of many students, they rely on their parents when attending school. Many parents pay for cars, and school. Also, in many cases, such as mine, I don't have my own insurance policy, and I am on my parents. Therefore, when I report the vandalism to the insurance company my parents have every reason to get angry with WCU police. In some insurance agencies this can hold against you due to the fact that the person that did the crime wasn't caught. This issue also upsets parents greatly, because they want to send their children to safe and secure schools where they don't have to worry about our safety issues. Each year, students pay tuition of approximately $8,000.00. Why is this not enough to ensure us that we don't have to worry about the safety of our Writer Believes he 'Struck Dear Editor, Well, I must say judging by the response to my letter, I've struck upon a significant point of contention within the WWCU heirarchy. Obviously, the new management has differing opinions than the previous administration. My point was simply that WWCU does not live up to the irritating tag "Today's best mix of music". Its good to know that there was at least one intelligent voice that tried to change the format to fit the moniker. Sad though that Big Daddy had to quit because he could not convince the DJ's at WWCU that what they are doing does not serve any- cars? Another question that many students ponder on is where are the police when these theifs are being committed? There are only so many places on the campus that you can patrol. So I ask myself what are the police force doing. We should not worry only with petty parking tickets but with major problems, such as vandalism. Parking tickets is a major deal here, and many are issued, but I think that there are bigger problems that should come first. Students should have the insurance that we were promised before we started school. Many changes could be made to lower these incidents. One example to change is to add more lights to the parking lots. This not only holds true to the break-ins, but fights, rape, and other violations. Anotha is to have one police on duty just to the 2 freshman parking lots. Therefore, this will lower the chance that people could break, steal, or vandalize any car. Other measures should be taken to prevent these, not only what I just listed. Change is possible, and more students would like that to be done. In conclusion, I personally hold anger against WCU police as many other fellow students do also. I ask myself where they were or what they were doing. I think that the security could improve greatly. I am not meaning to be rude, but only to show how I feel about the situations of the students. Vandalism is not fare to the students that put their trust into the police. It is not our fault as students why for some unknown reason who would do this, but we rely on the police to prevent this from happening. Many changes can be male and I believe that the vandalism to cars will decrease. If the vandalism to cars continue, the problem will increase and therefore make many people angry and some even may change their minds to come to WCU. This should encourage security to enhance their patrolling and make sure the vandalism decreases. Please take my considerations to thought. Michelle Tolley on Significant Point' one but children who have no idea that there are other, nay, higher forms of music that deserve a chance to be heard. To quote the amiable Big Daddy, "You really can't blame the staff of WWCU-FM because after all if you give a monkey a gun and the monkey shoots someone, who are you going to blame?". I think that is a fair statement of the condition of our little station. Don't you? I will call your program Mr. Moore II and request a song. Make sure you have a few decent CD's lying around. Sincerely, Gunther Cordovba Dear Editor, A lot of people believe that when temptation comes to a person, God always allows the person to have a way to overcome the temptation or avoid it altogether. I believe that the United States is at a point where we are collectively facing temptation. We are quickly approaching a point where we must choose between the Founding Fathers' vision for our country and a totalitarian future that the liberals have in store. The liberals want to have government control of every institution possible. Do individual states, counties, and districts not have the intellect to run their own lives? It would seem that the liberals would take the very un-Jeffersonian view, "No." Liberals in this country have wanted total federal government control over healthcare for a long time. As for education, why is it that we keep dumping more money into schools, but performance levels keep sinking? Obviously, Federal-level control is inadequate for running a useful public education system of secondary schools. There are other instances of the removal of "rights" by liberals. The Federal government has already taken away the rights of the weakest of groups: the unborn. When the Preamble of the U.S. Constitution says that we must secure the blessings of liberty for "our posterity," what other group should be most vigorously protected than our unborn children? Not every child is "planned" or even wanted. Yet, Providence has seen to it that they have a chance to come into the world. Who are we to take that away? If healthcare falls completely under government control, and euthanasia becomes more prevalent, then should we not infer that the government will even tually decide when it is time for us to die? Granted, the government has a place in maintaining law and order. I am sure that if neither the EPA nor the Forestry service existed, these hills would be a clear-cut wasteland with insecticide- laced river waters, hardlyfit for human or animal habitation. The choice before the American people is clear. Either we allow the socialist Liberal types to take control of more sectors of our lives through the continuation of Clintonian politics through Gore and Bradley, or we choose the alternative. As for the alternatives, there are two clear options. Only Alan Keyes and Pat Buchanan have proven themselves willing to face the true problems of our age, which are moral in nature. The Clinton campaign told us, "It's the economy, stupid!" Well, nearly eight years of Clinton has led us to the rise of political correctness and the absence of standards for our officials. The Gore/ Bradley side will just continue Clinton business as usual. Keyes or Buchanan will face the liberals and prevent their further invasion into our lives. They will appoint upright judges and justices to the Federal judiciary and to the Supreme Court. Finally, they will be men worthy of respect. People like Clinton's job as President, but they do not respect the man. Either Keyes or Buchanan will be respectable men who will do a respectable job. God has given us a chance to turn from the socialist/totalitarian/liberal path. Americans should not give up the 'unalienable rights' in which our Founders believed. Keyes and Buchanan offer the path of our Founders. Any other choice is a compromise of principle. Jason Clement Submitting Letters to the Editor The Carolinian welcomes letters from its readers.
