  • November 3,1999 GET A LIFE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Eat at Joe's? The Food Critic Prefers Lulu's Cafe Todd Higginson Staff Writer Lulu's Cafe 612 West Main Street Sylva, NC (828)586-8989 http://www.luluscafe.com If you are searching for a pleasurable dining experience, you don't have to go to Asheville or Atlanta. Lulu's Cafe in Sylva is a breath of fresh air. Many people value Lulu's as dining excellence. The eatery is a comfortable size. It's somewhat small, yet roomy enough to be considered cozy. The atmosphere has a neo-retro ambiance to it. The walls are pink with black trim, wine bottles line the sides, and fresh flowers adorn each tabletop. For being a full restaurant, I was amazed at how immaculately clean the bistro was from top to bottom. My party consisted of eight people, so it took about 45 minutes for us to be seated. Since it was a weekend, and right af ter the homecoming parade, 45 minutes was tolerable. The staff apologized for the wait, and quickly took our orders upon seating us. K.C. served as waitress for the evening, and proved to be both friendly and informative. She took all eight of our drink orders without writing them down, and brought out the correct drinks. I was amazed, since I could scarcely remember what I ordered! Briefly afterwards, the main entree orders were placed. The menu included a terrific combination of fresh foods, mostly Mediterranean. There is something on the menu that every palate would enjoy. Contemporary casual meets Old World elegance. Prices for entrees range How Bid 1".uta's Cafe Score? Cleanliness: Swib Service: Prkei Atmosphere.- -Healthy Opthmsi Parthmst Overall-. from $5.25 to $16.95. Beers, wines, and appetizers are available. Additionally, a reasonably priced children's menu is available to give your tots a fresh new taste. Most of the menu items are healthy, and there are many options for vegetarians and vegans. Now, there is something comical about Lulu's restroom situation. It is a trek to get there for the male members of the species. There is a side door towards the restrooms, but a hallway encompasses the other side. Then a sign pops up stating that the men's restroom is upstairs. To get there, you have to take an elevator! Guys: be sure to take enough provisions for a few days just to find the John. You may consider hiring a guide. I thought I saw a few skeletons of the souls that did not make it back, but perhaps that was just for Halloween. Shortly after the return from my journey, the food arrived, smelling terrific. I ordered Lulu's Italian pasta salad with grilled tofu ($7.25). The salad contained the following: warm rotini pasta with Dining mi intertoinment Calendar of Events Projection TV €H2> Karaoke dunmtPm Pp 1Uto» Sf$u« €5E& Open flojc/acous-tic jarv> 1% km iS$S2^ College Night |HOw sUNi. Lastly, it was doused in a delicious lemon-oil dressing. The presentation was perfectly and artistically arranged, without compromising portion. Fresh bread accompanied the entree. All of the different flavors complimented each other, which gave me a wonderful meal to the final bite. The amiable conversations between my comrades and me should have filled my soul, but K.C. informed me that they had pumpkin cheesecake. I resisted for an eighth of a millisecond before giving in and ordering the delectable dessert. Oh, how glorious it was—almost spiritual! The generous homemade slice of heaven was rich and creamy with subtle hints of pumpkin. A sugary cinnamon nut topping crowned the culinary master piece. Desserts are all in the $3.00 range, and well worth it. Lulu's has the best cheesecake in town. As I paid for my meal, I noticed a bowl of Halloween candy. It was cutesy-decorated, and had Final Assessment The Good: Elegant, yet casual dining with a flair. The Bad: Gentlemen: I suggest taking a canteen and a compass when taking an excursion to the restroom. The Ugly: I'm on nerve medication now for my new condition - wimpophoria. a green hand sticking up from the middle of the bowl. When I reached my greedy little hands in the bowl for a treat, the green monstrosity uttered "Happy Halloween" and fell down upon my hand. I was completely startled! I jumped back and let out a shriek. Of course the restaurant was packed with laughing patrons, ancj my friends got a big kick out of it. Overall, I recommend Lulu's Cafe highly. The prices are somewhat high for a college student's budget, but everyone should enjoy a nice meal occasionally. Take a date, or a few good friends. C E L ' IMPLY Your long distance plan confusing?
