  • WESTERN 20 CAROLINIAN SPORTS November 17,1999 Cats Beat Team Georgia Lady Cats Win Exhibition by Daniel Hooker Sports Editor It may have only been a preseason exhibition, but it was great to see. The Western Carolina Catamounts opened up their 1999-2000 season with a 98-89 victory over Team Georgia last Team Ga. 89 Friday night in the WCU 98 Ramsey Center. Fifth-year senior Dondrell Whitmore led the youthful Cats with his first double- double of the year with 27 points and 11 rebounds on 11 of 17 shooting. Western took the lead off the first points in the contest and would never look back. Sophomore point guard Casey Rogers sank a pair of free throws to give WCU the lead. Rogers finished with 11 points and 12 assists, and had five steals. Freshman Ricky Gandy was a third Catamount to have a double-double performance. His 13-point, 10 rebound WCU debut was impressive. Sophomores Cory Largent and Colin Kearns, as well as one-half of the "Hayes Connection," Jarvis also posted double- digits in scoring. Largent had 12, Kearns with 10, and Hayes had 13. Despite not posting overwhelming numbers, it was promising to see Leon Davis return to the floor. Even though he couldn't get many of his shots to fall, he exhibited a lot of hustle. The Catamounts led the Trojans by as many as 11 in the first stanza but held a slim five-point, 43-38 lead at the break. WCU opened with a 17-7 run in the second half to put some distance between them and Team Georgia. However, they battled back late in the half to cut the Catamount lead back to five before finally bowing out after Western responded with a 14- 4 run. Head coach Phil Hopkins and the Catamounts immediately traveled to Atlanta for a pair of scrimmages against Georgia State last Saturday. Hopkins and his squad will open up their regular season this Friday, November 19, as they travel to Southeast Missouri State. While on this trip they will travel to Columbia to take on the Quinn Snyder's Missouri Tigers. The Cats home opener is set for next Tuesday, November 23, when Lees-McRae comes to the Ramsey Center for a 7 pm tip-off. Yet, she was quick to point out that it is still early and her squad has a lot to improve on. "We' re very athletic and quick — that's going to have to be our strength this season. We also have to take better care of the ball," said Dunn following the win. Western was led by sophomore center Laura Echols. She finished with 20 points and seven rebounds in 24 minutes of play. Another sophomore, Tameka Parks, had the Lady Cats only double-double. Her 16 points, 12 rebound performance was impressive. She also dished out three assists and had three steals. Including the two aforementioned players, three others reached double-digits in scoring. Juniors Katie Scott and Kris Kent finished with 11 and 10 points, respectively, with yet another sophomore, Amy Proffitt pouring in 10 of her own. Last year's leading scorer, April Fleck could only manage four of 11 shooting from the floor, but did manage nine points, nine rebounds, and four steals. Western jumped out to a quick lead using the quickness coach Dunn alluded to. However, turnovers and a SMS run cut the lead to 39-36 half-time. WCU turned it up a notch in the second stanza, limiting Smokey Mountain to 22 percent shooting from the floor and a mirrored 22 points to end the game. Before the game, WCU received some bad news. The Lady Cats lost freshman Jenetta Heggins to a shoulder injury. She will be lost for the season, which will hurt depth and the athleticism of the team this season. WCU will open up their regular season this Friday, November 19, as they travel to Mercer University for a 7 pm game. Their home opener is Monday, November 22 as Tennessee State comes to Cullowhee for a 7 pm tip in the Ramsey Center. vs The Citadel ffhe Floyd BowlJ Saturday 1:00 pm E.J.
