  • November 17,1999 NEWS Distance Education Extends Campus OPI The boundaries of WCU's campus extend from Murphy to Hickory this fall, as 82 place-bound students pursue degrees in four academic programs through the use of interactive video technology. Designed for working adults, WCU's distance education initiative allows students at interactive video sites in Murphy, Franklin, Marion and Hickory to participate in "resident classes" being held at WCU's University Outreach Center in Cullowhee, or at the facilities of WCU Programs in Asheville. Students enrolled this semester are pursuing degrees in one of four areas: bachelor's degrees in early childhood education or industrial technology, or master's degrees in community college administration or educational supervision. "This distance learning class has been an answer to my prayer," said Irene Dowdle, who is working on her degree in early childhood education from the Marion site. "Not only do I have the opportunity to complete my education I started over 23 years ago, I can do it at a cost I can afford," said Dowdle, who works as a preschool teacher. "There is not the extra expense of traveling a great distance to attend class. I can attend class close to home, and with the completion of my bachelor's degree, I will be able to go further in my career. "The only downside to this type of learning is that it takes a lot of self-discipline. I am still in awe of the technology that makes all of this possible," Dowdle said. The initiative was made possible through a collaboration between WCU and three community colleges—Tri-County Community College in Murphy, Catawba Valley Community College in Hickory, and McDowell Technical Community College in Marion—and with the participation of Macon Programs for Progress in Franklin. Audio and video signals are transmitted via standard telephone lines between those sites and WCU's facilities in Cullowhee and Asheville, said Oak Winters, dean of WCU's Division of Continuing Education and Summer School. "This is two-way technology that really stretches the Western Carolina classroom some 200 miles," Winters said. "But the technology is second in importance to increasing public access to allow working people to earn degrees. That's our goal.'-' A student must have earned at least a two-year degree from a community college to enroll in one of the WCU bachelor's degree programs. A typical student will take one WCU course, plus one community college course to fulfill general education requirements, each semester. Including the summer term, the students take six courses over a one-year period, and can graduate with their degrees in three to four years. Tuition is the same as for on-campus courses, Winters said. Two of the degree programs started last January, and two more were added as the current fall semester began in August. Bachelor's degree programs in criminal justice and emergency medical care are scheduled to begin next fall. A GOOD NITES 847 No. Main St, Wayncsville, NC 28786 P AHEAD OF THE REST!!
