When Rights Are Used To Take Other's Rights Commentary by Seth R. Sams News Editor The forefathers of the United States of America granted their fellow citizens rights that they felt were inalienable, and those rights still stand, including the freedom of speech, religion, and press, and the right to bear arms. As years pass, and the boulder of time rolls steadily and quickly to the turning of another century, it is more and more clear that our forefathers could very well be sickened by how citizens of their country use their rights, for as people form opinions, they are sure to impose those opinions on others. The rights granted us have become, for some, rights used to take away rights from others.. In particular, a newsletter sent from North Carolina GASP (Group to Alleviate Smoking Pollution) to the News department at the Western Carolinian displays this fact well. The front of the newsletter displays a picture of the proud president of GASP, Dan Zaccaro, who pleads with members and friends of GASP to continue to take away the rights of smokers, so that they may one day not be allowed to smoke anywhere in public. Zaccaro states in his letter that they were successful in convincing shopping malls in the Winston-Salem area to do away with all smoking sections. Well, most malls don't have smoking sections inside, so if this group is trying to say that smokers can't smoke outside, then they are clearly infringing upon the rights of smokers. While the group will surely tell you that their right to good health surpasses that right, they also have the right to exit the mall at another location. If they walk in a restaurant or a bar and can't stand the smoke in the smoking section, and the nonsmoking section is not to their liking either, there is only one thing to tell them: Go somewhere else! Smoking has been outlawed in almost all open-air sports venues, college and pro, in this country—except for NASCAR, where fans would surely rebel. Thanks to state law in California, they won't have that problem at bars in California. Smoking is no longer allowed in any public place there, and NC has laws governing smoking in state buildings and public places as well. However, NC's main cro$ is tobacco, and they understand that while non-smokers have rights, so do smokers, and to infringe upon either's rights on this issue, would just be plain un- American. GASP needs to go back and study the history on which this great country is founded. fn ob^prvr-irK'r of Pet Peeve Week, the Western Carolinian )Q vvee Octobe tannine} salon 3125 located across from post office beside cullowee quick-stop Cheang CHINESE & JAPANESE CUISINE Bet you didn't know... ...that most Chinese food contains high fat and a ton of calories.
