  • 2 Ca53E8&aN NEWS September 22,1999 September 14 In response to a weekend report of a speeding vehicle at Walker, officers set up the radar trailer in the area. One campus citation was issued at 6:35 p.m. for a vehicle going 41 mph in the 20 mph zone. At 10:27 p.m., officers responded to Leatherwood on a noise call and, finding beer in a hallway outside a room on the 4th floor, had it destroyed. The noise incident was referred to Housing. September 15 As a result of a follow-up interview, officers found that a set of hub caps reported stolen by a male student on 8/26 had been taken by his friends as a joke and had been returned. The victim did not wish to pursue the matter and the case is closed. Officers identified the person making harassing phone calls to a male student in Harrill as a male student at ECU. The calls were related to a traffic accident which the caller claims has not been settled. The caller was instructed by police to call no more and to initiate criminal or civil action if necessary through local police where the accident occurred. At 1:00 p.m. on 9/15, Housing staff reported the odor of marijuana on the 4th floor of Helder. Officers interviewed the residents of one room and a small bag of marijuana was later found on the ground outside the residence hall. At 9:55 p.m., officers conducted a walk-through of Walker Hall based on prior reports of marijuana smoke. At 10:05 p.m., officers conducted a walk-through, interviews, and three consent searches of rooms in Scott based on prior reports of marijuana smoke. At 10:20 p.m., officers charged two male students from the 5th floor of Scott Hall with possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia. September 16 At 9:30 p.m. on 9/15, officers cited a female student for fraudulent use of a handicapped placard (belonged to a friend) at Harrill. At 1:10 a.m., a student reported that someone had cut the door of his Jeep while it was parked in the Walker A lot between 9/12 and 9/15. September 17-19 At 8:45 a.m. on 9/18, a vendor reported that the Coke machine and a vending machine in Walker Hall had been overturned and damaged. The incident apparently happened between 2:30 a.m. and 4:00 a.m. At 7:35 p.m. on 9/18, officers heard male shouting profanities from Helder Hall. While investigating the incident, a Housing staff member reported that she had just confronted two males in a hallway on the third floor who were unescorted. They ran away before they were identified. At 8:45 p.m. on 9/18, officers assisted Housing staff in Leatherwood with a report of someone throwing bottles out a window. No contact with the suspects. At midnight on 9/18, officers responded to a fight at the Dance Club of the University Center. One male was arrested in front of the UC for drunk and disruptive. The investigation of the incident is continuing. At 7:39 p.m. on 9/19, officers responded to a report of a fight outside Leatherwood. No contact with the suspect, but witnesses indicated that those fighting were female and the incident may have been related to the fight at the UC last night. New Program in effect 2001 A GOOD NiTIS SHIP AHIAB OF THI 847 No. Main St, Waynesville, NC 28786 Gerry Wood (828)454-0222 continued from frontpage on campus who are completely against [the proposal]." He cited a letter circulated by the Geology Department that questioned resource allocations. Professor of Criminal Justice Bill Hyatt voiced the concerns of the College of Applied Sciences. Many programs in this college require accreditation that does not allow for a student to count a General Education course as a major course. In essence, they may be forced to take extra classes. Vice-Chancellor Collings stated to Western Carolinian "If we need to make exceptions so people will meet accreditation standards we will do that." The proposal now moves into the implementation phase. According to Vice-Chancellor Collings, a Liberal Studies Committee will be formed within the next month to screen proposals submitted by the various departments. "It is going to take a while to design the new courses," Collings said. "From now until the end of next fall we have a year to do the introductory courses. The Liberal Studies Program is scheduled to go into effect in the Fall of 2001. Current students will have the option to switch to the new program. "That is one of the details we have to work out," he said. "The further you are along in the old one the less you will want to [change programs]." In other business before the Faculty Senate, Chancellor Bardo reported on the size of the freshmen class. "Our enrollment is up. Our freshmen class seems to have stabilized at 1165. That is compared with 1087 last year," he said. "Our retention rates appear to be up for both freshmen to sophomore and sophomore to junior. That is a very good sign." Bardo also reported that Honors College SAT scores for the 145 freshmen in the program averaged to 1217. He also stated that Wake County has replaced Buncombe County as the second largest pool for students. Mecklenburg County is still first. "We believe this has implications for increasing our enrollment," Bardo said. CLASSIFIEDS WORK!
