  • western ■• • arolmian Flames Burn Cats by Daniel Hooker The Western Carolina Catamount football team opened up the first game of the Bill Bleil era with an emotional loss to the Liberty Flames at E. J. Whitmire stadium Saturday night, 17-10. "These kids played hard. I was proud of these guys. They never gave up," commented Head Coach Bill Bleil. He also noted, "We're going to have a good football team." The opening kick-off return, in which Flames return man Courtney Freeman took it 42 yards to give Liberty its first of numerous great starting field positions, set the stage for the first half of the game. The Cats' defense could only slow the Flames' attack. With 11:12 left on the clock, the Liberty drive culminated when senior quarterback Ben Anderson found Courtney Freeman in the end zone, making the score 7-0 Flames early in the contest. The Catamount offense, despite moving the ball fairly well, ended their first three drives with Ken Hinsley punts, which the Flames converted into 17 points before the Cats hit pay dirt. Taking the ball from their own 20-yard line and driving 80 yards, utilizing a mixture of run and pass plays, the Cats scratched the scoreboard late in the second quarter. With 2:03 remaining before halftime, the Cats cut the Flames lead to 10, at 17-7. Sophomore Kamarco Butler, a native of Ware Shoals, S.C, caught 44 of his 84 yards of the day on this scoring drive. Despite giving up 17 points to Liberty, Western's defense played extremely well in the first half. They held the strong Liberty offense to 19 rushing yards on 14 carries. Yet, throughout the second half, the "D" stepped it up a notch, and shut down the Liberty offense. "In the second half, I think we performed the way we should have [the whole game], and that's pretty darn good," remarked Gaffney, S.C, senior Marcus Bradley. "We're going to get even better," he added. The Catamount offense woke up in the second half, nearly tripling their output from the first half. Yet, the first two drives that they made in the second half, despite involving a good movement of the football, could not find the end zone. Two times, inside Liberty's 20-yard line, senior quarterback Josh Brooks' passes were picked off. Another time saw a Ken Hinsley field goal attempt blocked. Yet, the Catamount defense kept them in the game. With 8:55 remaining in the game, the Cats started a drive that would finally end with some points. Following a fumble caused when Liberty punt returner, Marlon John mishandled the kick and Cedric Crudup for Western recovered on the Liberty 14-yard line. Trainers assist Eric Johnson with an injury. With 5:30 remaining in the contest, the defense was called upon to try to hold the Flames at bay again. Western's defense came out clawing and caused a turnover that would give life to the Catamount cause. Marcus Bradley nailed Flame runningback Walt Heilig, causing him to cough up the football, and Leander Dumas recovered at the Western 49. The Cats' final drive came up short as a pass from Brooks to Kenya Crooks was batted up in the air, completed to Crooks, but was hopelessly short of the first down or end- zone. This failure to convert capped off a night in which the Catamounts entered the red zone five times only to convert on two drives. "We had the ball in the red zone a couple of times and threw interceptions in the end zone. Those are some of the things you can't do. We've got to overcome those kind of problems," stated Bleil. As for Kenya Crooks, a transfer student from Clemson, this was his first game in a Catamount uniform. He caught seven passes for 80 yards in his debut and tallied the only touchdown for Western. "I'm happy here. I'm enjoying it here " said Crooks. "The game was no measure of how good we are going to be. We are moving the ball," he added. The Catamounts will lick their wounds and prepare to face a tough Southern Conference foe in The Citadel's Bulldogs. The game will be in E. J. Whitmire Stadium/Bob Waters Field this Saturday at 6 p.m. Score bv Quarters 12 3 4 Score Liberty 3 14 0 0 17 Western Carolina 0 7 0 3 10 Scoring Summary: 1st—LU-11:12 - P.
