  • Carsflinian editorial & classifieds April 28,1999 15 Aramark Makes A Mockery of Employees Dear Editor: Aramark Food Services of WCU has made a mockery of its full time and student employees, the students, and therefore, needs to leave. Student employees are traditionally granted raises for every semester to semester and a half they work. There are several who have worked with Aramark for at least two semesters and have yet to see a raise, or have time served under Marriott at WCU honored by Aramark (a written agreement). Working conditions are degenerating and employees are told to perform more with less and often ill-equipped. They, at times, have to cover more than one unit by themselves because of under staffing. As a result, there are some who have had to work 7+ hour shifts without any break — a violation of State law. Ever gone to Chick Fil-A or the Sub Line on weekends and wonder why it took so long to get served? A direct result of Aramark refusing to hire or schedule more people to cover those units because of money. A slap in the face to workers who have to put up with it and to the students who endure. In a contest over money, Aramark underbid Marriott and Chancellor John Bardo awarded them the contract despite a Student Board voting against him. Aramark underbid Marriott to such an extent that just to "break even" they had to shrink an existing employee base and raise food prices. However, Aramark did manage to switch food distributors from Monarch to Sysco costing them and the students almost twice as much for identical food quality. Go figure. Students are paying higher food prices and budgeting themselves on a declining balance scale, allowing expenditures of only $40 a week, averaging around $5.71 a meal for 7 meals per week. Don't most resident students eat twice a day, 14 times a week and eat about 10 meals per week on campus? An extra $274 not accounted for on declining balance. If one goes to Chick-Fil-A and purchases these common items — 12 piece nuggets, fries and a medium size drink, they've just spent over $6 dollars. Now, we know it can be done. People make it through a semester with hundreds of dollars to spare. Point being, prices are too high and wallets are stretched too thin. It is speculated Aramark will end Flex and the buffet at Brown in favor of "a la carte" at Dodson. Yet another price hike. Well, Clete (head of food services) and Aramark, we certainly hope that your days here are numbered. In an ideal society, we revel in thought of WCU finding Aramark in violation of its contract somehow and removing them from campus. But we know that's not going to happen so, unfortunately, we are stuck with Aramark for 4 more years. A number of Student employees have read this, affirmed it, but wish to remain anonymous because their job here is contingent upon them being able to pay bills and they fear possible repercussion. Employees' names withheld upon request.
