  • ifiisn"! Catamounts Take 2 of 3 from ETSU Buccaneers Junior catcher Austin Smithwick has batted slam Saturday against ETSU. Photo by T. K. Roberts 12-17 (.706) over the last four games, including a grand by Daniel Hooker Sports Editor Catamount pitching gave up 21 hits, including six homeruns, to Buccaneer batters as East Tennessee State prevented Western from getting its third seasonal sweep, beating the Catamounts 12-9 in 10 innings Sunday. WCU (20-14, 8-5) defeated the Bucs (14-15, 9-7) 18-3 and 11-10 in the series two opening games last Saturday. The Cats are 16-3 at Childress Field/Hennon Stadium this year. "Overall it was a positive weekend," said Catamount head coach, Rodney Hennon. "East Tennessee State has a good team and we were able to take two of the three, but had a chance to sweep the series. Our kids played hard right to the end." Junior David Pember started the game for WCU, but was chased after six innings of work. He surrendered nine runs, only three earned, on 15 hits with three strikeouts. However, he wasn't the pitcher of record. Freshman Brad House suffered the loss, dropping his record to 1-1. In three and a third innings, House gave up three earned runs on five hits, striking out a pair. "It was a tough day to pitch today. The wind affected the way the balls carried, but it was blowing out just as much for us as it was for them," said Hennon. Western went up 3-2 in the bottom of the third, but ETSU's rallied with a seven run top of the fourth. Included in the inning were four homeruns, three coming back-to-back-to-back with two outs. The inning could have been over before the damage was done, but an odd play prevented it. With two outs, Pember got Nathan Copeland to bounce back to the mound. However, the ball wedged in his glove. So, after taking a few steps towards first, he tossed the ball—and the glove—over to first baseman Steve Harris. Harris was surprised, and couldn't make the play. That rattled the Cats, starting the damage. Right fielder Eric Johnson led the Cats at the plate on Sunday. "EJ" went 3-for-6, with a pair of doubles. He also extended his hitting streak to 14 games. During this streak, he has hit 27-63 (.429). Another Cat, junior Austin Smithwick, has been on fire at the plate. The Catamount catcher has gone 12-17 (.706) over the last four games. Smithwick had a 13-game hitting streak, which had been the team's longest, broken at The Citadel two weeks ago. "I've been looking for something to drive, and the opposing pitching seems has been giving it to me," commented Smithwick. Saturday's seven-inning finale saw WCU rally in the bottom of the seventh, scoring two runs to pick up win No. 20, 11-10 over ETSU. Western also improved to 7-0 in one-run games this year. Erik Turnrose, who has become one of Western's best pitchers out of the bullpen, came in relief of Robbie Hoover. Turnrose only pitched two-thirds of an inning, striking out one. Charles Thomas repeated his last inning heroics from the win over Clemson last Tuesday, driving in the winning runs in the form of Tracy Biggs and Johnson. In Saturday's first game, Western used a 10- run eighth inning to secure the 18-3 win. As a part of that inning, senior shortstop Chris Moore broke Mike Carson's 12-year school record of doubles. The record-breaking 63rd career double came with two outs in the Catamounts 10- run eighth inning. Moore finished the weekend with 64. Western Carolina will play host to archrival Appalachian State this weekend. Coach Hennon knows that it is a big series, but he is quick to point out that every series from now until the end of the season is big. "It doesn't matter who we're playing. We just need to be ready to play and then simply play our game," said Hennon. "Of course it's going to be exciting playing App, but we need to be excited about everybody we play." If the WCU-ASU rivalry isn't enough to draw you to the ballpark, then how about $475? That is the amount that will be given away in the bottom of the sixth, which is the Catamount homerun inning. Game time for Saturday's double- header is 12 noon. Sunday's game is slated for 1:00 pm. «i Lose Weight Fast" Closely guarded secrets available to You!
