  • CarfWinian Track Continues Success in Georgia by Daniel Hooker Sports Editor Coach Danny Williamson and the Western Carolina University Track team continued this season's success by setting three school records and taking first place in six events at the Spec Town Invitational this past weekend in Athens, Ga. The event wasn't team scored. However, teams from the University of Georgia, Auburn, Middle Tennessee, West Georgia, and conference rival, Chattanooga all competed. Williamson was pleased with the way his team performed at the event. But he was quick to point out that his team can't let up heading towards the Southern Conference Championships. "We felt like we had some very good performances," commented Williamson. "It's another step in the right direction in what we're trying to accomplish, and that is the outdoor championship." The women's team, who, according to the United States Track Coaches Association (USTCA) Division I Team Ranking, is tenth nationally, brought home five first- place finishes. Kamilah Gabriel turned in a pair of record breaking performances in the hurdles events. In the 100-meter hurdles, she ran a 14.05, breaking her own record of 14.19 posted earlier this season. Her 1:00.71 mark in the 400-meter hurdles broke an eight-year old record of 1:01.5. Keeya McManus didn't break any school records, but she did win the 800- meter with a time of 2:11.67. Valerie Metz won the shot put (43 feet), Ashley Heredon won the javelin (135-9), and Valerie Jalajas won the pole vault event, clearing 11-2.25. For the men, Phillip Johnson, ranked 15th according to the USTCA, Oshattered his own WCU school record in the hammer throw. His mark of 183-8 broke the previous record of 178-1, which was set last year in at the Southern Conference meet. "They're [Gabriel and Johnson] breaking school records, and that goes back to their work ethics," explained Williamson. "Hopefully, everyone on the team will see that and it will rub off." Western's men posted three second- place finishes, with Johnie Morrison in the 100, Aaron Wright's long jump of 23-8, and Josh Langley's second in the javelin (156- 11). The team also posted a pair of third place finishes. Rahsaan Uldaneta finished third in the 110-hurdles and Jeb Hall was third in the shot put (48-4.5). Western will travel to Knoxville, Tenn., this Thursday through Saturday to compete in the Sea Ray Relays before returning home in two weeks to host the WCU Invitational. That home meet will include the likes of Furman, East Tennessee, Wofford, Chattanooga, Mars Hill, and Cumberland. It will serve as the last tune-up before the conference championship. "We feel like we are in a position to go after the Southern Conference Outdoor Championship. We feel like we're getting in a position to win," said Williamson.
