  • Iinian Crossroads a Welcomed Change to Nightclub Scene in Sylva Photo by Aaron Krauss Edgar Winter played to a capacity crowd at Crossroads' grand opening on Saturday night. by Phoebe Esmon Features Editor The first time someone told me that a real honest-to-God night club was coming into Sylva, I thought it was a joke. I had been to Bailey's, Sylva's original erstwhile evening spot in its hey day, and had been completely underwhelmed. Paying someone for the right to buy beer from them in an ex-garage, where the odor of carbon monoxide still lingered and intertwined with the smell of stale cigarette smoke, was never my cup of tea. And you know what they say about once bitten... Never fear. Although Crossroads is but a hop, skip, and jump from Bailey's former downtown Sylva location, (presently the home of Sneaky Pete's) it could not be farther from away from its not-so-illustrious forebearer in quality, presentation, and planning. I had occasion to visit Crossroads on its first two nights of operation. On 3/19, there was an open house, featuring the music of local band, The Blues Bombers. March 20th marked Crossroads grand opening, and featured the music of '70's rocker Edgar Winters. Those of you moaning about the area's lack of a band scene must not get out much. The Blues Bombers is the best local band I've had the pleasure of hearing in a good long while. (I would tell you how long, but its depressing to think about) Covering tunes by greats from Van Morrison to Rikki Lee Jones to Eric Clapton, these guys (and one gal- singing lead) are more than just technically proficient, they're genuinely talented and having a great time. With soulful vocals and a playlist from heaven I urge anyone looking for a good night's entertainment to take in their next show. To be perfectly honest, I enjoyed the Blues Bombers, who played both nights, (opening up for Edgar Winters on Saturday) much more than the Edgar Winters himself. Winters' band, apart from just not being my thing, played over pre-recorded arrangements, which were really distracting. Now don't get me wrong, the man can play the hell out of a saxophone. It's just that I kept looking for the rest of the horn section until someone explained what was going on. Crossroads is a welcome change. It's clean. The staff and owners are pleasant. There are no pool tables, dart boards, or juke boxes to inadvertently cause distress, and I wasn't afraid of accidentally walking into a bar room brawl. But wait.. .it gets better. The owners of Crossroads are dedicated to supporting local musicians as well as bringing in larger acts. On April 17, Dr. Hook will be performing. Local bands such as Oliver Soup and Classic Boredom have already been booked. They are planning stand-up comedy nights, hosted by Grant Turner, and featuring nationally renown comics for the first and third Thursdays of every month. There will also be swing dancing, complete with instruction on the second and fourth Thursdays of every month. For dates, times, and cover prices, you can call Crossroads at (828) 631-3322, or access their website at www.crossroads- sylva.com. Tickets for upcoming events can also be purchased at In Your Ear Music, Mainstreet, Sylva. —x^r -_A/o£ ^yd* NOrOA —m, ■—» —aE em, f^ttbt torn waetn tiuou^ktt far a cold winter dap..* WIN a Caribbean Cruise for Two an *»»inC"*SS ©r«i««s!
