  • 10 Despite Prognostications, Catamount Seniors 'Hungry' for 10th SoCon Baseball Title photo by Daniel K. Hooker Catamount seniors (L-R) Brian Hutchinson, Erik Turnrose, Steve Harris, and Chris Moore. by Daniel Hooker Sports Editor A college baseball team wins 45 games, including a win over nationally-ranked Clemson, while dropping a mere 15, including a 20-6 conference record, and they aren't satisfied? Western Carolina's second- year head baseball coach, Rodney Hennon explained that despite having a very respectable record last season, his team didn't accomplish two of their preseason goals—winning a Southern Conference Championship (a feat accomplished eight times before) and making it to the NCAA Tournament. "This group is hungry to get the conference championship back in Cullowhee," stated Hennon. "We've got a solid nucleus returning. The guys we're running out this year have a chance to win a championship—we expect to compete for the title year in and year out." Practice for the upcoming season started just about the same time students returned to campus. "Practice has been going well. The weather has been great," commented Hennon. "We've had approximately four scrimmages so far. We have swung the bat well, as our defense is looking solid." Hennon sums up his team by stating, "We will be a solid offensive and defensive club. A major key to our team's success will be the depth of the pitching staff, primarily in the bullpen." Examining the Catamount pitching staff, one notices that WCU lost three key pitchers who combined for a 21-3 record last year—major league clubs drafted all three. A pair of seniors will anchor this year's staff, while two juniors will provide depth. Erik Turnrose and Brian Hutchinson, the staff's seniors, bring experience and maturity to the pitching rotation. "We have experience with the top four—big game experience. Beyond those four, we're not real experienced. But we are very capable," said Hennon. According to Hennon, Turnrose has good movement on his pitches and "when he's on, he's tough." Hutchinson, or "Hutch," was drafted in the Fortieth round by the Toronto Blue Jays. Yet, he decided to come back for his senior year. Coach Hennon is sure that Hutch will move up in the draft after this season. The juniors that will vie for starting positions are David Pember and Aaron Kirby. Last season, these two combined for 10 saves in 79.1 innings. Kirby finished with a 1.62 earned run average and a 4-1 record. Pember, who Hennon calls a "hard thrower," went 4-2 in 1998. Freshman Robby Hoover from Kingsport, TN, will also challenge for a starting role in the proposed four-man rotation. Right-handed pitcher Wes Overbay, another freshman from Kingsport, will be used in set-up role, as well as any other pitcher on the staff. Hoover, or even Eric Johnson, is being looked at for the closer position. If pitching is going to be a strength, Rodney Hennon says that this year's team is going to have some offensive fire power. It all starts at the top of the lineup. That's where sophomore Charles Thomas resides. Last season, Thomas hit .364 as a freshman. He also has good speed for the leadoff position. Thomas looks to start in the outfield. "He has the knack for getting on base," explained Hennon. "He Baseball America Southern Conference Preseason Poll 1. The Citadel 2. UNC Greensboro 3. Western Carolina 4. College of Charleston 5. Georgia Southern 6. Furman 7. Wofford 8. East Tennessee State 9. Appalachian State 10.Davidson 11.VMI is as good as any other in our league." Football All-American Eric Johnson is predicted to start in the outfield and bat in the two-hole. This will put speed in the number one and two spots. Coach Hennon stated that the Cats will be aggressive on the base paths just as they were last year—but, he feels that this year's team is stronger at the plate. EJ didn't see an enormous amount of playing time last year. Hennon attributed that to him also playing football. "These other guys are playing baseball all fall and summer. EJ misses a lot of fall practices," stated Hennon. Senior Chris Moore is slotted in the three-spot. Moore is perhaps the most consistent and powerful hitter on the Catamount team. From his shortstop position, he brings a lot of experience and leadership. "We build our lineup around him," Hennon explained. "He's one of the better hitters in our conference." Hennon also picked Moore to contend for the Southern Conference Player-of-the-Year. The fourth and final senior will bat clean up and play first base. Steve Harris, who transferred from Charleston Southern last year, is nursing a hamstring strain. Harris has good power and decent speed to try and protect Chris Moore right in front of him. Starting from the fifth spot down, the players are almost interchangeable. Battling for the left field spot are junior Tracy Biggs and freshman Chris Torres. Biggs has speed and Torres is a 1999 Catamounts Baseball Schedule Date Qppeneo.t Htaa 3 pm Feb 13 at Coastal-Carolina Torn Feb 14 at Coastal Carol, na 1 pen V Feb 20 WRIGHT STATE ' i . Third base is also a spot where two players, Charlie Wands and JonDempsey will battle. Wands, a sophomore from Lewisville, NC, is an intelligent player. Hennon said that he isn't a flashy player, but he will get the job done. Dempsey is a junior college transfer from Johnson, City, TN, who adds the potential for more firepower to the Cat lineup. A junior from Bennett, NC, Austin Smithwick is looked to be the starting catcher. Hennon commented, "He's our man." Yet, Matt Price will fill in some.
