  • ■man Lady Cats Fall to ASU rts December 2,1998 by Don Costello Managing Editor WCU's women's basketball team was unable to parlay the success of the football team into a victory of their own over Appalachian State. The 68-56 loss to the Mountaineers is the fourth straight to the rivals from Boone. The stats tell the story for the Catamounts: 29 percent shooting from the field, 21-for-36 from the free throw line, and only one player scoring in double figures. "Offensively, we weren't there," said first-year head coach Jill Dunn. "It's hard to win shooting that way." Another factor in the loss was the ineffectiveness of WCU's three leading scorers. Coming into Monday's game, April Fleck, Willow Russell and Beth Currence were each averaging 10 or more points per game. The trio scored a combined 11 points against the Apps. "Everybody struggled," said Dunn. "I don't think any of our post players took the ball strong to the hole." The struggles of the three leading scorers was a big factor in the Lady Cats 15-point halftime deficit. Currence connected a free throw for the only point out of the frontcourt. Combined, WCU's start ers had only five points at the break. With the score tied at 11, ASU went on a 21-8 run to open up 17-point lead. WCU could not catch up in the second half, only outscoring the Lady Mountaineers by three in the final 20 minutes. Over the Thanksgiving Break the Lady Cats were able to end their two-game skid with a win over High Point, 68-66. In that game Fleck, Currence and Russell scored 37 points combined. Senior guard Tamara McMahan chipped in with 10 of her own including two free throws with 14 ticks remaining in the game to give WCU a four-point lead. Freshmen Laura Echols and Amy Proffitt each scored eight points in the victory. "They continued to fight and fight and would not give up in the game against High Point," Dunn said. The Lady Cats are 2-3 on the young season and 0-1 in the Southern Conference. The UNC Asheville Lady Bulldogs will make their way to the Ramsey Center for a 7 pm contest Thursday night. It will be the last home game for Western in 1998 as they embark on a five game road trip that includes visits to Florida State and Georgia Tech. Cats Start Season 1 -5 Sports Information Western Carolina's slow start against some high profile opponents this season is nothing new to followers of Catamount basketball, and the Cats have been able to rebound successfully in the recent past. The '98-'99 team's 1-5 start, which includes losses to then-#6 Maryland, then-#24 Clemson, Oklahoma, and Tennessee is reminiscent of the 1995-96 WCU team which lost seven of its first eight games to the likes of Georgia, Tennessee, Duke, and N.C. State. After clearing the "money-game" hurdle, the '95-'96 Cats, in Phil Hopkins' first year as head coach, went on to win 16 of its remaining 21 games, win the Southern Conference title, and advance to the NCAA Tournament. Similarly, the '94-'95 Catamounts began the season 1-6 while playing Georgia, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Iowa State, and Iowa, but managed to bounce back for a 14-14 season under Coach Benny Dees. While the caliber of competition has had more than a little to do with it, Western Carolina's shooting and turnovers marks have proved to be major areas of concern in the early portion of the 1998- 99 season. Photo by Teddy Greene Todd Seibert in action against the Vols of UT. In the Catamounts' five losses, only once has Western shot better than 35% from the floor and the Cats have turned the ball over at least 21 times in all six of their games. Both marks hit a season-worst this past Monday in Western's 84-41 loss to Tennessee as the Cats managed to make only 17 of 58 shots from the floor (29.3%) and equaled their season high with 26 turnovers. Junior forward and two-year letterman Joey Bryson (Horse Shoe, N.C.) suffered an injury to his hand on Monday morning in a non-basketball related incident and is out for at least three weeks, according to WCU sports medicine officials. Bryson suffered a fracture as a result of an outdoor fall and did not travel with the team to Tennessee on Monday night. He had started three games this season and was averaging 4.8 points and 3.8 rebounds a game. He has played in 47 games during his career at WCU despite having to rebound from a series of injuries and illnesses his first two seasons. WCU's next game is Monday night in Fayetteville, Arkansas, where the Cats will take on the Nolan Richardson's Arkansas Razorbacks. They will return home next Thursday for contest against Newberry. Two Catamounts to Play in Post-Season Seniors Game by Daniel Hooker Sports Editor It was announced on Wednesday that two Catamount football seniors would be playing in the post season. Senior offensive tackle Dan Best and senior kicker/punter, Ken Hinsley will play in the Blue-Gray game for Division I college seniors. The game will be played in Montgomery, Alabama on Christmas Day. Both Best and Hinsley were named to the Southern Conference first- team offense following their performances this season. Hinsley was successful on seven of 15 field goal attempts, as well as connecting on a 85-yard punt. Dan Best was instrumental on the Catamount offensive line. He was part of the tandem that assisted running back Brad Hoover. These two participants are only the second and third Catamount player to make it into that game. The other WCU participant was in 1992 when Willie Williams played in the holiday honor game. Williams went on to the NFL where he played for the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Super Bowl. He is currently playing cornerback with the Seattle Seahawks of the AFC.
