WCU Acquires Climbing Spire for Outdoor Skills Program -OPI Western Carolina University's department of health and human performance has acquired an inflatable climbing spire for teaching rock climbing in its outdoor recreation skills program. Purchase of the spire was made possible by a $ 10,000 gift from Robert M. Failing of Santa Barbara, Calif., a WCU alumnus and retired pathologist; and a $5,000 gift from Mike Fischesser of Alpine Towers, Inc., of Burke County. A long-time supporter of WCU, Failing developed a life-long interest in outdoor activities and mountain climbing when he was a student at WCU in the 1950s. His passion for climbing has taken him to the top of six of the world's seven highest peaks. By June 2000, Failing hopes to climb Mount McKinley, the only peak that has eluded him. If successful, he will be, at 71, the oldest man to successfully reach the summit of North America's highest peak. Fischesser, a former climbing instructor for Outward Bound, designed and built the 30-foot-high polyurethane climbing spire. He reduced the price of the spire by $5,000 so that WCU could purchase it. Maurice Phipps, assistant professor of health and human resources at WCU, said the spire came fully equipped with harnesses, ropes and helmets. The climbing spire, with numerous hand and footholds, is suspended from the rafters in Reid Gymnasium and can be adjusted to provide different degrees of climbing difficulty. Four people can climb the spire at one time. Phipps said the spire initially will be used for instructional purposes in outdoor skills classes. As instructors are trained, he said, the spire may be available for recreational use. HOURLY SALES CLERK NEEDED bookstore $5.75 pep hour. One thing I've always admired about him is that he always had a bipartisan approach," Mercer said. Mercer added that he hopes WCU will bring more prominent figures to speak to the students in the future. Dr. Betty Farmer, a professor in the Communication and Theatre Arts Department, had the honor of introducing Dole to the students. "Dole was an excellent choice as a first speaker," Farmer said. "It's an honor and a privilege because he is a great American." Student Government Association President O.J. Morris accompanied Dole at the dinner and was with the group of three students who picked up the former senator at the airport. Seniors Kim Dills and Sam Chontos were also in attendance. "I honestly think the visit from Dole lifted the students' spirit," Morris said. "I was surprised with the turnout at the Ramsey Center and the students forum." Morris added that Dole's a laid back, funny guy. "He loosened me up because I was a little nervous [about meeting him]," he said.
