Whitmire 5 years U.S. Air Force (Served in Korea) Member VFW and American Legion Retired Educator of Jackson County Member Hamburg Baptist Church Franz Whitmire Urges Every Registered Voter to Vote November 3rd Voter Registration Drive to Be Held Thursday by Don Costello Managing Editor The Student Leadership Institute of Pi Gamma Mu will be holding a voter registration drive on Thursday, October 8, from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. in front of Hunter Library. It will be a non-partisan voting drive for the students. No candidates or campaign materials will be present. The deadline for registering to vote in this year's election is Friday, October 9, so this is the last chance to be eligible for the November 3 election. Fred Fisher, graduate president of Pi Gamma Mu, stressed that one does not have to be a resident of Jackson County to register on Thursday. Once the registration cards are filled out they will be turned in to the Jackson County Board of Elections to be mailed to the home county of the registered voter. He also pointed out that any North Carolina resident who will be 18 years of age by Election Day on November 3 is eligible and encouraged to register. The Student Leadership Institute is a student led organization within Pi Gamma Mu, the international social science honors society, that concentrates efforts on the importance of students getting involved in their community. Fisher, who is also coordinator of the voting drive, said the drive is focused on the motto: "Be informed, get involved, and make a difference." He added, "Registering to vote and taking part in the political process follows that." Western Carolina University does not recognize Election Day as a holiday. Therefore it is necessary for registered voters to request an absentee ballot from their county's Board of Elections. An absentee ballot can be requested by writing the Board of Elections and including a mailing address and date of birth. North Carolina also has the "One-Stop" absentee voting program where, starting October 12 and ending October 30, any registered voter can go into the Board of Elections office and vote absentee just as if they were at the polls. The ballots are then sealed and tallied on election day. For more information contact the Jackson County Board of Elections at (828) 586- 7538 or your local Board of Elections office. 'Rape' Continued from page 1 Haggard: Complaints are Frequent owned, and although fraternities are associated with the University, they are also "corporations separate from the University," according to Chancellor John Bardo. "It is a policy of the University that we assist victims in contacting the sheriff as well as providing University based support services," Bardo stated. "I personally am concerned that we continue to improve our support for victims of violence." "I think that the idea that victims of sexual assault can't find support at the University, I just don't believe that's true," Gene McAbee, Head of University Police, said. "As far as a large number of allegations against any one fraternity, we haven't seen that. We're still talking about three or four incidents a year, some of those involving incidents at fraternity houses and some of them on campus." Complaints can be filed, though, against a fraternity itself, according to Bill Haggard, the Associate Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs. "It happens all the time," Haggard said. "However, we will not have a strong case against the fraternity unless we know the names or descriptions of the alleged assaulters." Complaints made by multiple witnesses and victims will also make the case stronger, according to Haggard. "It is our practice for the alleged victim of a sexual assault to determine the course of the case," Haggard went on to say. "I would not move ahead without her permission and knowledge." Although there is much the University can do to help rape victims, the ultimate decision to prosecute the suspect is up to the Jackson County District Attorney. Students who have been sexually assaulted should first get to a safe place and try to preserve all physical evidence. In order to this, the victim must not shower, use the bathroom or change clothes. Victims should then seek medical attention and contact the WCU Police Department. If the assault occurred off campus, University Police will assist the victim in contacting the Jackson County Sheriff's Department. It is also recommended that victims of sexual assault talk with a professional counselor, either at Counseling and Psychological Services, which can be contacted at 227- 7469, or at the Smoky Mountain Counseling Center, at 293-9281.
