New Manager Highlights Changes at WWCU by Kaci Barker Staff Writer Western Carolina's radio station, WWCU-FM, has been adding and changing many things since the summer. The change started when the radio's general manager Matthew Johnson resigned, and Jeff Barnett was appointed general manager by the Media Board September 10. One of the new additions to the radio station is the installation of an automated computer that allows for broadcasts when Djs are not manning the station. The music is stored into a play list, which plays repeatedly throughout the night. Barnett said this allows everyone to listen to their favorite music mix, 24 hours a day. Last year, the radio station went off the air at 1:00 every night. The station has just been given a construction permit by the FCC. This means that the station has been approved for a power upgrade from 350 to 760 watts, which will increase its power about 150 percent. A.C. Slater, a DJ for WWCU-FM, said that with this increase of power, you will be able to hear WWCU-FM crystal clear in surrounding towns, and counties. Some of the new listening areas, such as Bryson City, have limited radio broadcasts. The radio station will be totally run by students of Western Carolina University. Barnett spoke of 30 or more volunteers, and seven members that make up the executive staff. WWCU-FM purchased a new computer that allows for Internet broadcasts over the Z91 homepage at www.z91.com. Barnett said these added computer capabilities allow them to receive news reports from around the world on a faster basis. Barnett said to look forward to more new additions to WWCU-FM including the purchase of another computer, that will allow DJ's to do live news reports all througout the region. He also said to listen for a chance to get a free WWCU-FM tee shirt or bumper sticker that has their logo on it, Z91. Jeff, would also like to thank everyone who listens and supports WWCU-FM. DJ Jennie G, a senior, said she loved being on the radio, and that it gave her a chance to play the kind of music, that people want to hear. WWCU-FM is preparing for many changes this year including an expanded listening area. -photo courtesy The Catamount inian Terr)' K. Roberts, Editor Seth R.
