  • ■man WCU'S 1998-99 Cultural Series Includes Poet Laureate, Chamber Music, Turkish Dancers -OPI A reading by North Carolina poet laureate Fred Chappell, comedy by the Reduced Shakespeare Company, classical music by the acclaimed Muir String Quartet and sacred dance and music by the Whirling Dervishes of Turkey are among the nine events scheduled for Western Carolina University's Lectures, Concerts and Exhibition Series for the 1998-99 season. A reading by poet Brenda Marie Osbey will open the 1998 portion of the LCE series at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 21, in the Grandroom of the A.K Hinds University Center. Osbey is winner of the 1998 American Book Award for her critically acclaimed "All Saints: New and Selected Poems." * Other events on the 1998 portion of the series are the Whirling Dervishes of Turkey, Monday, Sept. 28; "The Complete History of America (Abridged)," presented by the Reduced Shakespeare Company, one of the world's best known touring comedy troupes, Friday, Oct. 16; a prose and poetry reading by Fred Chappell, a native of Haywood County, Monday, Nov. 9; and chamber music by the Muir String Quartet, acknowledged as one of the world's most powerful and insightful ensembles, Sunday, Nov. 22. Peter Schjeldahl, regarded as one of America's preeminent art critics, will open the 1999 portion of the LCE series with a lecture on art criticism Wednesday, Jan. 27. Other events during 1999 are Marimba Yajelon, performing marimba music from the Chiapas region of Central America, Friday, March 26; the Gregg Smith Singers, performing historic and contemporary choral music, Thursday, April 22; and "Ivy Rowe," a one-woman play based on a character from Lee Smith's novel "Fair and Tender Ladies," Tuesday, Feb. 16.Programs begin at 7:30 p.m., except the performance by the Muir Spring Quartet, which begins at 4 p.m. LCE events are open free of charge to WCU students with valid identification cards. Fry on June 2,1998. A native of Jacksonville, Florida, John graduated from Lee High School and Western Carolina University where he received a BSEd in Social Sciences and a MS in Human Resource Development. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in Vietnam. John was initially employed by the Division of Youth Services, HRS of Jacksonville, Palatka and Green Cove Springs, Fla. For the past seven years, he worked as the Career Resource Specialist with the Office of Career Services here on the WCU campus. He also served as a freshman and sophomore academic advisor and as the faculty advisor to the Kappa Alpha Fraternity, John will be greatly missed by all of his university friends. The other three events will be in the recital hall of the Coulter Building. Prices are $10 for adults, $8 for senior citizens and WCU employees, and $5 for children and non-WCU students. Fred Chappell, Peter Schjeldahl, Brenda Marie Osbey and "Ivey Rowe" are one-star events. Chappell and Osbey will read in the Grandroom of the A.K Hinds University Center. Schjeldahl and Ivy Rowe" will be in the recital hall of the Coulter Building. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for children and non-WCU students.
