  • western ■• • arolinian ing back home. Look for him and Hogan to have one last call to glory before retirement. Sign of the Week: Tyson Bites. INSIDE SCOOP by Greg Iredell Welcome back to the Scoop, dedicated to "Jersey" Mark. I was 4 for 5 in my predictions for the Royal Rumble; here's the results. Vader pinned the freakish Gold Dust with minor problems. The Legion of Doom won over the New Age Outlaws by disqualification. The Outlaws handcuffed Hawk to the ring post as they pummeled Animal. Hawk broke out of the cuffs and cleaned house. The Tag titles cannot switch hands as the result of a disqualification. Shamrock had apparently won the Intercontinental championship from Rocky Miavia. The ref found brass knuckles on Shamrock (that Rocky planted) and disqualified him. Shamrock snapped and suplexed the ref. He was rowed. The Royal Rumble held no surprise contestants. It was revealed that Chainsaw Charley, who lasted a while, is the over-50 Terry Funk. Stone Cold won as I predicted. Shawn Micheals retained the WWF title in the Casket match with the Undertaker. This one was brutal, Piledrivers on the metal ring stairs and Tombstones into the casket. Cain attacked the Undertaker, allowing Micheals to close the casket. Cain and Paul Bearer then set the thing on fire. The Undertaker's remains have not been located. Mike Tyson watched the show from a luxury box with Vince McMahon and son. WWF Raw saw the oldest tag team, Chainsaw Charley (Funk) and Cactus Jack, in recent history. They wrestled the Quebecers, who were the French Canadians in the WCW. Shawn Micheals dropped from the ceiling dressed as the Undertaker. Dx talked for 20 minutes. Shamrock did his best to get at Rocky Miavia. Watch for Shamrock to get another intercontinental title shot soon. McMahon introduced Iron Mike Tyson, who came to the ring with his entourage. Vince was about to announce Tyson's role in Wrestlemania when Stone Cold entered the ring. Austin insulted Tyson and showed him his two favorite fingers. Angered by this, Tyson shoved Austin across the ring. McMahon yelled 'You ruined it" and attempted to kick Austin, who was being held by security. I don't think Tyson will wrestle any time soon. Look for him to be a guest referee first. During an ad for the WWF hotline, Jim Ross stated, "It's going to be a Macho week in the WWF..." Randy Savage joins the rumors of elder wrestlers corn- by Fish Hello fans, and welcome back from vacation. Not that much has been going on as of late with WCW and the angles that they have created. On Thursday Thunder, thunderstorms took out the cable reception and made it look REALLY bad. The only highlight of the night was my man, Bill Goldberg, taking out Disco Inferno. Hopefully, that took care of the fad formally known as "Disco." On Nitro, we have seen the Steiner Brothers getting at each other's throats after they lost the Tag belts to the Outsiders. Scott has been taking things on by himself as of late, and brother Rick is left standing there wondering why am I not getting a piece of the action. This is bad news for all of the Steiner fans. Also on Nitro, we see that Ric Flair is still good ol' dirty man Flair when he gets up in Bret Hart's face and dares him to say that he's "the best there ever is, was, or ever will be." This looks to be a good match coming up at Souled Out. Speaking of Souled Out, I will bring you the highlights of this PPV in the next Wrap-Up. Look for it next week in the same spot as always. In the news for this week, it seems that rumors persist that "Hollypuke" Hogan is still not under contract. From what I've heard, Hogan has signed a multi-year deal with a raise of $1.5 million. Look for him to stay his last days with WCW. Coming up at Superbrawl (the next PPV after Souled Out), look for a tournament to be held to find out who the real champion is. The rumored match for the finale is to be Sting vs. Hogan, but this time it's in a STEEL CAGE! That's the news for this week. Coming up soon, I might have a HUGE announcement concerning one of the most well-recognized wrestlers. I've been in negotiations with ARN ANDERSON and his agents about doing an interview. I got a response and it seems that if I can give them some info on some people they can get in touch with... He might come right here to Western to give an interview and have an open forum for all the wrestling fans!!! I'll keep in touch with you throughout the weeks on this developing situation. Sign of the week: A picture of the kids of South Park with "The NEW 4 Horsemen" written above it. I thought you people might appreciate that! Boone, Here We Come by Don Costello Western Carolina University's record versus Appalachian State is less than desirable this season. The football team dropped a heartbreaker, 13-7, on a cold day in Boone back on November 15. The following day, the volleyball squad fell to the Goons 3-1 and also lost to ASU in Cullowhee on October 10. Now the basketball teams will have their shot at App State. The men's basketball team will travel to Boone on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. contest. The Cats lost all three meetings versus ASU last year. The Goons ended Western's season with a 19-point victory in the Southern Conference Tournament last February. ASU squeaked by Western in Boone with a 68-66 win and conquered the Cats in a double overtime thriller in the Ramsey Center, 81-76, last January. The last win for the Catamounts came in the magical season of 1995-96 when the Goons fell to the Cats three times including the last game of the regular season that clinched the Southern Conference South Division title. The Cats matched up with the Goons in the first round of the SoCon Tournament and the result was the same. Head Coach Phil Hopkins will take a pounding from ASU fans as they promote their "Phil is Fat" contest. Hopkins commented that he will just take this game in stride, "like any other." Appalachian State has dominated the series since the first meeting in the 1927-28 season. The Goons won 57-19. ASU now holds a 89-57 series advantage and a 15-6 mark against the Cats in the '90s. "I'd be lying if I said I wasn't gonna do anything different versus App," said senior forward Bobby Phillips. "App State and Western is a big, big game but we're just gonna come out and try to win." On the women's side, the story is not much better record-wise. Appalachian has dominated Western, 43-19, in the 28-year series history. The Lady Cats did fare better against the Lady Goons last year as they were able to defeat App in the Southern Conference opener, 72-70, but fell in Boone by 21 points. The WCU/ASU women's series began in 1969-70. The Lady Cats routed App, 61- 38, in their first meeting and defeated them again, 50-46, later that year. The Lady Cats ended that year with a 16-3 record under the leadership of WCU's winningest women's basketball coach, Betty Westmoreland. When the Lady Cats travel to Boone on Thursday, new head coach Maria Fantanarosa will be looking to start her own winning tradition against the hated rivals from Boone Vocational Institute. Game time is set for 7 p.m. Intramural Update Here are the results of the Intramural basketball free-throw contest: Men's All Campus Champions are Jason Morgan and Lamont Harris who hit 46 out of 50 and Jerry Wellmon and Kyle Warlick who duplicated the 46 of 50 performance.
