  • western ■• • arolmian Men's Basketball Ready to Roll by Donald Costello The men's basketball season will begin tomorrow night with an exhibition game versus Crossfire in Reid Gym. Head Coach Phil Hopkins is looking to take the Catamounts to their third straight winning season, a feat that has not been accomplished by a Western squad since the 1979 and '84 seasons. Hopkins says the key to success of this team will be how quick the new players step up and contribute. "We are counting on them for a lot of outside shooting and post play," said Hopkins. The crop of seniors will also play an intricate role in the upcoming season. Senior forwards Bobby Phillips, Jarvis Graham and guard Joel Fleming are the only returning starters from last year's team. Phillips averaged 14.1 points per game in his junior campaign along with five rebounds per game. He was also an all-conference selection last season and was voted to the Southern Conference's Preseason All- Conference Team. "Bobby is the vocal leader of the this team," said Hopkins. "He is the hardest working player I've ever been around." Jarvis Graham averaged six points per game last season and 3.1 rebounds per game. He has played in all but two of the Catamounts games in the past three seasons. "Jarvis has been through the wars and has had some very big games for us at power forward over the past three years," Hopkins remarked. Rounding out the senior class, Joel Fleming will be the on-court leader of the Catamounts this season from his point-guard position. The Woodleaf native averaged 10 points per game last season and has started m 43 of the last 44 games. Fleming will also be the key player in Hopkins' renewed emphasis on perimeter snooting. He has averaged 33.8 percent from behind the arc in his three years with the catamounts, including a 40.3 percent mark 'ast season. "Joel knows the role of point guard and Jiows we are expecting more than ever from nim this season," stated Hopkins. "I am consent that he will accept and handle the pressure of the role and be one of, if not the best Point guard in the conference." Fleming will be running an offense that "optans describes as "up-tempo" to put pressure on the defense of the opponents. "We wan to have an offense suited to our talent L" *at S is what fits this team," remarked "opkins. Pioneer Community College, Leon Davis, Three Rivers Community College, and Derrick Drummond, Hutchinson Community College, are the three jucos that will be taking the court in the Ramsey Center. Cuthbertson scored 12.7 points per game at Northland last season, shooting 44 percent from the field and dishing out 4.7 assists per game. He also played high school basketball with Joel Fleming. Leon Davis was recruited to fill the void the Catamounts had at the inside forward position. Davis led Three Rivers in rebounding with 7.1 per game last season. He averaged 10.2 points per game with a 52 percent shooting percentage and a 78 percent mark from the stripe. "We recruited Leon mainly for help inside, but he is a fundamentally sound player in all areas and can run the floor, defend, rebound, and is a skilled offensive player with a nice shooting touch," said Coach Hopkins. Rounding out the juco class is Derrick Drummond. Drummond will offer help to the three-point shooting of the Catamounts as he shot 40 percent in two seasons at Hutchinson from the three-point arc. This year's freshmen class includes guard Stacy Ervin, who averaged 33 points per game last season at Twin Springs High School in Virginia. He is the all-time leading scorer in Virginia high school history with 2,687 points. Ervin averaged 43 percent from three-point range as a senior and 80 percent from the charity stripe. Chad Wall is the other incoming freshman for Western this year. Wall is a 5'10" guard from Roanoke, Va., who will look to contribute as the Catamounts take on another tough schedule. Western will open the season with a pair of games against Big 12 powers Kansas State and Missouri on the road. "They are two teams that we can be competitive with because we can match up athletically with them," said Hopkins. The contest versus the Catamounts will be the first game ofthe year for each team. The Cats will also travel to Minneapolis, Minn., to take on one of last year's Final Four teams, the Minnesota Golden Gophers. The Gophers lost their starting core but will still be looking for the elusive Big Ten title. Hopkins says that the schedule is not as tough this year as last year's that included Cincinnati, Kentucky and Duke. As for the Southern Conference, Davidson is the pre-season pick to win the conference as well as Coach Hopkins' pick. "Davidson is the favorite, but not the clear-cut favorite," said Hopkins. "I think we can compete for the [conference] championship as we have the past four years if we can do a solid job on the backboards," stated Hopkins. Western will make its debut in the newly realigned divisional system in the Southern Conference. The Cats will play out of the North Division that includes Appala- ',C^n'3ftt^,'EastTd'n\jb^eV.StM,.YMX,' Western's three seniors, Fleming, Graham and Phillips, listen to Coach Hopkins. Photo by T.K.
