  • Western Carolinian March 28,1996 Features Fugazi Rocks Charlotte's Tremont Music Hall by Scott Francis Associate Editor On Saturday, March 23, Charlotte's Tremont Music Hall was packed, but in a strangely comfortable and non-threatening way. Outside, young people from all walks of life stood in line to get in. Those who were smart enough to purchase advance tickets allowed themselves to be herded inside like cattle. The club itself was of a comfortable size and atmosphere. I hardly expected to see people just lounging around on sofas and shooting pool while waiting to see the renowned underground band Fugazi. My friends and I strolled through the crowd right up to the stage and checked out the opening bands. The most interesting of which was the Makeup, whose frontman reminded me of some kind of strange hybrid between the Artist Formerly Known as Prince, Aerosmith's Steve Tyler and a disturbed televangelist. When Fugazi took the stage you could have heard the proverbial pin drop. Guitarist Ian Mackaye immediately set the stage for a good evening by singling out a member of the audience who threw a bottle over his shoulder. When the same individual made the mistake of trying to slam dance at the beginning of the first song, Mackaye stopped, kindly reminding him of Fugazi's "no moshing" policy: "I should have fuckin' known it would be you who'd start that shit." Fugazi is committed to H making sure that everyone has a good time. The fans come first. The band works hard to keep their shows affordable—a mere $5 will get you in (and their full-length cassettes are always available for only $7). This/coupled with Mackaye's rule against mosring ensures that everyone gets a fair shot at enjoying the band. After Mackaye's small public service announcement, Fugazi resumed their set beginning with "Birthday Pony." They played favorites from their two latest albums In on the Killtaker and Red Medicine, including "Do You Like Me," "Facet Squared," and "Public Witness." The show was a non-stop display of aggression once again proving Fugazi to be a band of utmost integrity. EVWIN MCCAIN COMB TO WCU by Arch Stanton Staff Reporter On April Fool's Day, tickets will go on sale for the Edwin McCain concert. Singer-guitarist McCain has been compared to such acts as Hootie and the Blowfish and the Dave Matthews Band. His band is currently touring to support its debut album Honor Among Thieves, which features the hit single "Solitude." McCain has opened for such well-reputed acts as the aforementioned Hootie and the Blowfish and WCU's good friends the Allman Brothers. The concert is part of WCU's "Spring Fling."
