  • February 15,1996 Western Carolinian 15 Sports Catamount Track Team Leaves Their Mark at Clemson by Collin Webster Staff Reporter Southern Conference teams from Imnan, Appalachian State, The Citadel and firginia Military left the Tiger Indoor "lassie Track Meet with only two things on heir minds: purple and gold. The meet also ■(led teams from Clemson, UNC Sarlotie, UNC Wilmington, Florida State, East Carolina, and Brevard College, all of whom lasted record-shattering performances ty the Catamounts, who broke five school 'words at the meet in Clemson, Sj.C., Friday. "This meet gave both our men's and "omen's teams an opportunity to improve in ^ areas and set us up for the conference tournament," WCU Head Coach Danny Williamson stated. "We challenged both groups to turn it up a notch and we got a few more people involved." Things were turned up more than a notch. WCU's men broke three school records. David Batten bettered his own school mark in the 60- meter dash with a time of 6.94. Brian Ballard set a new school record of 8.90 in the 60-meter hurdles. Also, Derek Summerour heaved the shot put 53 feet and seven inches to rewrite the 13-year-old record. Batten placed third overall, Ballard sixth, and Summerour third. There were other noteworthy performances, as well. Randolph McCray ran a team season-best 51.09 in the 400. Jonathan Boyce and Trey Miles finished seventh and eight, respectively, in the 200 with runs of 22.79 and 22.86. David Chambless placed second in the 800 at 1.56.17, and Brian Clark ran a team season-best of 8.45 in the 3,000, placing him third in the Southern Conference rankings. Finally, Turner Norris ran an outstanding double with a team season-best 4.24.22 in the mile and then turned right around to run only seconds behind Clark in the 3,000 with an 8.49. Two new school marks were established on the women's side. Rahma Mateen ran the 60-meter hurdles in 8.91 for first place. She also placed second in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.88. Just as a side note, she also managed to win the long jump with a mark of 19-3. Other top performances from thy women's team included a slew of top 10 finishes. Wykesha Bailey was second in the 60-meter hurdles; at 9.62, fourth in the long jump at 16-1J.75, and fifth in thc 60 at 8.15. Emily Redmon won the 800 with a team season-best 2.16.87 and Maggie Donahue was fourth at 2.18.67. Laura Beck led the WCU pack in the 400 with a seventh place showing of 1.00.06. Kristcn Savery was second in the mile with a team season-Uesu 5.11.87. Western's shot put duo of LaSha Jackson and Zondra Johnson topped all previous team 43-4.5 and 40-10.5, respectively, the competition. Williamson's squads will return to Clemson Friday for the fourth time this season to compete in the Clemson Classic. "Our goal is to get everyone at the level we need to be at to compete in the Southern Conference championships," Williamson said. The Southern Conference will be held in Lexington, Va. Feb. 23-24. The Golden Eagles won the season ppener 5-4 in 12 innings. They beat the Cats j 1—8 on Saturday and 12-2 on Sunday. GAME 1: UCF 5 - WCU 4. j Catamount ace Clark Maxwell pitched allowed only one hit and one walk while striking out eight through eight innings as the Cats took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the ninth. But the bullpen gave up a two-run homer in the ninth by Adam Johnson that sent the game into extra innings. The Cats then broke through to take a 4-2 lead in thc top of the twelth on RBIs by Chad Moore and J.P. Burwell. But Central Florida first baseman Thornton Davis hit a three-run longball with two outs in the bottom of the twelth to hand the Cats their first loss of the season. Burwell and Tony Home had three hits for the Catamounts. Western had 14 hits and drew four walks on thc day but stranded 10 baserunners. GAME 2: UCF 1L-WCU 8 Western committed six errors that led to four unearned runs to fall to 0-2 bn thc year To add to the ugliness, Catamount pitchers walked seven Central Florida batters J P.: Burwell continued his rjot start at the plate, going 2 for 5 with a hoperun. Matt Stillwell, Alex Tolbert, Dave McKay, Kevin Baldwin, and Martin Barrow all had two hits for the Cats. GAME 3: UCF 12-WCU 2 The Golden Eagles completed the three-game sweep with strong pitching, good defense, and hot hitting to send the Catamounts back to Cullowhee winless on thc year. Steve Golden and Grant Eckard combined to limit thc Cats to just six hit and ivvo runs while striking out five. UCF exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the eighth to break open a fairly close game. Starter Matt Difelice took the loss for I he Catamounts. Tony Home and Kevin Baldwin each had two hits for the Cats. Cats Crush Wofford Davidson used a strong finish to put away Western Carolina for a 69-60 Southern Conference win in women's basketball Monday afternoon in the Ramsey Center. The game was the second of a four-game home stand for the Lady Catamounts.
