  • September 14,1995 Western Carolinian 21 Sports Catamount Volleyball Western Carolina University's volleyball team opens the home portion of its 1995 schedule by hosting the Catamount Classic this Friday and Saturday in Reid Gymnasium. The Catamounts (4-5) will host North Carolina A&T on Friday morning at 11:00 a.m. and return to the court Friday evening for an 8:00 p.m. matchup with Tennessee Tech. Western will also play one playoff match on Saturday pending the outcome of Friday's pool play. Friday's matches involving the other teams in the Catamount Classic are: Cincinnati vs. UNC Wilmington at 9:00 a.m., UNCW vs. Mercer at 1:30 p.m., North Carolina A&T vs. Tennessee Tech at 3:30 p.m., and Cincinnati vs. Mercer at 5:30 p.m. Saturday's schedule will pit the third-place teams of each pool against each other at 9:00 a.m.. The second place teams will play at 11:00 a.m., and the tournament championship match will take place at 1:30 p.m. Admission to all matches is free of charge. Western Carolina is coming off an encouraging performance in its second week of play as the Catamounts won three of five matches in the past weekend's Furman Invitational. On Friday, WCU defeated Mercer, 15-12,16-14,12-15,15-8, and downed Wofford, 15- t/15-8,15-13. An exhausted Catamount squad returned to the court Friday night for its third match of the day and suffered a 15-4,15-7,15-7 defeat to perennial Southern Conference contender Furman. The Catamounts split their Saturday matches, beating Charleston Southern, 15-8,15-8, 15-6, and then losing again to Furman, 7-15,13-15,16-14,15-2,15-6. I was very pleased with our ability to stay focused throughout the entire game during some of our matches," Coach Sara Martin said. "We showed a lot of character and played well defensively both on the floor and at the net. Our serve receiving was improved over last weekend, allowing our offense to be more crisp." A standout both offensively and defensively for the Catamounts was Mary O. Goebel, a ,unior middle blocker who was named to the six-player all-tournament team. Goebel, who was also honored with all-tournament accolades in the first weekend of the season, totaled , T*s'18 blocks, and 24 digs while posting a solid .289 attack percentage. Goebel, who led 4 06 w Uthem Conference in kills per game through the first week of the season, averaged •6 kills a game for the tournament and is currently putting away a team-best 4.10 with a J17 attack percentage for the season. ., Also s°lid throughout the tournament was senior setter Kristen Baxter, who average assists a game and added 14 service aces to her WCU career-record total. Baxter urrently has 188 career aces and leads the conference in aces per game (1.0). It h gardinS the upcoming home tournament, Martin said, "It will be nice to be at home. should be a competitive tournament and we'll have to step up our level of play again in order to finish well in our pool."
