  • March 30, 1995 Western Carolinian Features ROTC gets on the "Ball" Jennifer Jackson Staff Reporter After two semesters of planning, Cadets, Cadre, and other members of WCU's ROTC department finally reaped the rewards of their hard work at the Annual Military Ball. Maggie Valley Country Club hosted the ball. Each year, the cadets find ways to earn money for the ball through fund raisers. Along with managing these fund-raisers, the Junior and Senior Cadets are in charge of planning the Ball. Cadet Jeff Carfagna said, "The cadet's most feared phrases this year were: 'Do you have your candy money turned in yet?' and 'We are putting down the basketball floor at 0600.'" The Ball is a chance for everyone to celebrate, so the cadets are encouraged to bring their families, dates, and friends to join in the fun. This year, over 60 people attended. Cadet Lieutenant Colonel David Burris said'The Military Ball helps to familiarize the Cadets with the formal part of the military and expose non- military guests to Western's ROTC program." The Ball was divided into two sections. The first part of the night involves introductions, a formal dinner, awards, and a speech. The second part of the evening is when the real party begins, with dancing and socializing. At the Ball, many Cadets received awards for The Ranger Challenge. Burris was the only Cadet to receive an award from The Retired Officers Association for displaying outstanding leadership potential. This reward is given to those with good academic standing and high moral character. "On behalf of Western's ROTC department," Burris said, "we want to thank General and Mrs. Teagarden, Maggie Valley Country Club, WCU Print Shop, and Ray's Florist for helping to create an enjoyable evening." JK IE ~W E "W ffEinsteinfs Dreams t? Scott Francis Staff Reporter "Einstein's Dreams" is the new book by Alan Lightman. Though based upon Einstein's theories, the book is a work of fiction. It is presented as a collection of dreams that Einstein may have had—thirty fables that explore theoretical realms of time. Each of these fictional dreams of Einstein "probe the essence of time" while presenting a moral in the process. Though the realms of each dream are different from our world, adhering to different concepts of time, there is something of the human spirit in each one that reminds the reader of the importance of using time wisely and living life fully. Each dream focuses upon a different fictional realm where time functions differently than in our world, but human activities of the characters parallel our own. By showing the reader human reactions to these warped realities, Lightman forces the reader to analyze the virtues and inadequacies of human character. Lightman has written for several publications including Harper's, The New Yorker, and Granta. He currently teaches physics and writing at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. "Einstein's Dreams" is his first work of fiction, but he has written other books which include "Time Travel and Papa Joe's Pipe," "A Modern-Day Yankee in a Connecticut Court," "Origins," "Ancient Light," "Great Ideas in Physics," and "Time for the Stars." "Einstein's Dreams" may not be for everyone. Its exploration of metaphysical realms may prove to be gibberish to some readers who simply want a story with a beginning, middle and end. This doesn't mean that its just some boring collection of fictional theories that can only be appreciated by your physics instructor. There is a lot in this book; you just have to dig deep to get it. The Student Development Office is now accepting applications for the positions of Editor in-Chief of the Western Carolinian, Editor of the Catamount, and General Manager of WWCU-FM. Applications may be picked up in 460 HFR between 8am and 5pm daily and must be returned there by Thursday, March 30. Qualifications for each position are: Editor, The Catamount Yearbook: a. Only full-time WCU students with a cumulative QPR of 2.25 or higher are eligible. b. Applicants must demonstrate a minimum of one year experience as a regular staff member of the Catamount or as a staff member of a professional publication, or one year experience as a staff member on a high school yearbook staff Editor, Western Carolinian: a. Only full-time WCU students with a cumulative QPR of 2.50 or higher are eligible. b. Applicants must demonstrate a minimum of one year's experience as a staff member of a high school newspaper, or completion of Journalism 140 and 240 or their equivalent. c. The student selected for the position may not hold an elected position in the Student Government Association or the presidency of a campus organization ^during his/her term of office*^ General Manager, WWCU: a. Candidate must have served oi the station's executive staff for at least two semesters. b. Only full-time students with a cumulative QPR of 2.25 or higher are eligible. c. Candidate must attain a semester GPA of at least 2.0 on no less than six hours each semester as GM. After the semester of appointment, the GM need not be a full-time student.
