  • Western Carolinian September 22, 1994 •II The "Cardiac11 Cats Arrest Citadel John Price Staff Reporter It was the last 56 seconds of the WCU-Citadel game when the Cats scored their final touchdown, causing a 42-38 victory and proving that the game's not over until it's truly over. The final scoring attempt was actually started by Craig Aiken, who returned the Citadel's last kickoff 69 yards, which took the Catamounts to the Bulldog's 15-yard line with 44 seconds left on the clock. Fullback Harold Hines scored the winning touchdown with a 15- yard run straight up the middle of the Citadel's defense. Phil Shirley scored the final point of the game with his extra point kick. "I guess you can call us the cardiac cats tonight," said Western head coach Steve Hodgin - "We demonstrated a lot of fortitude in this win and you have to credit the entire team with a great effort." The Citadel coach Charlie Taaffe said even though he was disappointed with his team's loss, he felt that his players also showed a lot of effort. This effort definitely did show from tremendous scoring drives by quarterback John Burton, who rushed for a game-high 161 yards and threw two touchdown passes for 19 and 57 yards, and fullback Travis Jervey, who rushed for 113 yards and three touchdowns. But in the end, the Bulldog's great passing and running were not enough to take the game from the Catamounts. Western was the first to score in last Saturday night's game at Johnson Hagood Stadium with an 81-yard scoring drive that ended with tailback Tim Johnson's I-yard touchdown run. Shirley's extra point attempt hit the goal post to leave WCU with a 6-0 lead with 8:06 left in the first quarter. The Bulldogs received the ball on their 35-yard line from an out-of - bounds kick. Within 10 plays and 65 yards and an extra- point kick, the Citadel took the lead to 7-6. The Citadel gained possession again, from an intercepted pass thrown by Western quarterback Chad Greene, with 18 seconds left on the first quarter clock. After a failed field goal attempt by the Bulldogs, the Catamounts took over on their 21-yard line with 12:36 min. left in the second quarter, but were forced to punt after only four downs with a five yard gain. On second and 1, the Citadel's Travis Jervey carried the ball up the middle for a 61-yard touchdown. Justin Skinner kicked the extra point for an 8 point lead. Western's next drive was cut short when a fumble caused them to lose possession of the ball on the Bulldog's 44-yard line. The Citadel boys took advantage by going 56 yards in 3 plays for theT.D. Skinner's extra point kick gave his team a 21-6 lead with 7:39 left before the half. Western's next series of plays was an awesome display of offensive rushing. After 16 plays and 74 yards the Cats made it into the end zone with Tim Johnson scoring the touchdown from the 1-yard line. Green passed to Hines for the 2pt. conversion to give Western a score of 14, only 7 points away from the Bulldogs 21, which accounted for the score at the end of the first half of the game. The Citadel scored first after the half, with the help of a 60-yard run by quarterback Burton to the Western 2-yard line with less than 8 minutes left in the third quarter. Jervey finished off the scoring rush by going straight up the middle for the touchdown. Skinner's kick made the score 28-14. The Cats headed for the comeback trail on their next 10 plays with Greene hitting receiver David Patten for a 28-yard touchdown. Shirley booted in the extra point to change the scoreboard to 28-21, the score that would end the third quarter. A forth quarter rain didn't stop the Citadel from rushing hard up field where a successful field goal from the Cat's 12 gave the Bulldogs a 10 point lead. With no return from the kickoff Western gets the ball on the 22 with 13:26 left in the game. The Catamounts head down the field where they find themselves on the Citadel 19-yard line with first and 10.
