  • July 14, 1994 Western Carolinian 11 Sports Magical Mountain Trout Lure Anglers WCU senior Douglas Chambers fishes for brown trout along the Tuckaiseegee river. His bait of choice? "Nightcrawlers, of course!" Photo By Justin Menickelli Robbie Robertson Sports Editor Western North Carolina offers a vast array of fishing waters ranging in size from roaring rivers to sparkling little ribbon-brooks. They hold the most sought-after of gamefish, the rainbow, brown, or brook trout. And fisher-person anywhere can use anything from a graphite fly. rod to a cane pole and see results. The nearby Tuckaiseegee River holds good numbers of rainbow trout and absolutely huge brown trout in some of its deep southern pools, between Cullowhee and East LaPorte. In fact, finding a place to fish may be the easiest part. What to fish with might be a different story. For the purist there is the flyrod, a wispy tool as technologically advanced as boron or as primeval as laminated bamboo. Correctly and delicately fished, there is no better way to take mountain trout. However, spooky trout and light lines give a great advantage to the fish, scaring away most first-time fly- fishermen. The big-fish fisherman chooses a more blunt approach, the spin-casting outfit. While the fly-fisherman relies on stealth and cunning, the spin fisherman relies on giving the fish what it wants most: a big meal. More trophy trout are taken with spinning outfits because that is what they like to eat best. A 20-inch brown may pass up a #14 fly, but will eagerly bite a flashing spinner or wobbling baitfish lure. And the difference in that is the difference between a french fry and a Big Mac. The fish grow big eating big foods. Fishing natural baits is another popular method. Trout love corn, doughballs, cheese-balls and nightcrawlers. Check recent fishing regulations on types of lures and baits allowed as classifications change from year to year. Catamounts Fill Four Forward Posts Western Carolina University completed its basketball recruiting campaign with the signing of four forwards that joined an earlier guard s'gnee. Coach Benny Dees announced the May signing of three ™gh school players - Jarvis Graham °t Hartsville, SC; Cory Norman of Wersonville, IN; and Versile Shaw of N(jw Orleans, LA - and a junior college player - Kevin Kullum of St. Louis, MO; Joel Fleming, a point guard ,r°m Woodleaf, NC, signed with WCU m April. & •' Our emphasis, obviously, was the forward positions and we rengthened those positions with ^ickness, size, and athletic ability," Dees said. "I know potential is an overused word, but it is exciting to watch Jarvis and project the type of player he will be in a couple seasons." Norman is a 6-4, 205 pound product of Jeffersonville High, one of Indiana's perennial basketball powers. In his four seasons as a starter, Jeffersonville posted a 128-12 record and won the state championship in 1993. This past season, he averaged 14 points and 12 rebounds a game for Coach Mike Broughton's team. "Cory is an outstanding rebounder and very strong. He should gives us some help on the backboards in the very near future," Dees said. Shaw, 6-5,195, was a second team Louisiana Class 5-A All-State selection and first team All-Metro in New Orleans when he averaged 13.7 points, 12.3 rebounds, and 3.0 blocked shots a game and was a key to St. Augustine's 34-3 record, which included a 29 game win streak. "He runs the floor extremely well for his size and loves to rebound," Dees said. Kullum, 6-7,195, averaged 24 points and 10 rebounds for Forest Park Junior College in St. Louis. Dees expects immediate help from the junior college transfer. "Kevin is an outstanding shooter that will give up instant help with our scoring," Dees said. "He is a good ball handler for a 6-7 player and also works the backboards well. "We are especially excited about what he can do for us offen sively," he said. Fleming, a 6-0 point guard, signed with the Catamounts in April. He led West Rowan High in Mt. Ulla, NC to a 27-1 record by averaging 20.1 points, 5.8 assists, and 4.5 steals. Courtesy WCU Sports Information. McCormick Named Asst. Coach Stephanie McCormick, a native of High Point, N.C, and an all-district and all-conference basketball star at Catawba College last season, has been named as assistant women's basketball coach at Western Carolina University, effective July 1. McCormick will fill the vacancy created by Jana Williams, who resigned earlier this month to pursue educational goals after a four-year stint with the Lady Catamount program. McCormick, 22, is a recent graduate of Catawba, where she earned a bachelor of arts in business administration. As a center and forward for the Lady Indians, she was a four-year letterwinner and finished her career as the school's all-time leader in both rebounds and steals. She is the only woman in Catawba basketball history to total over 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in a career. She was under the direction of current Western Carolina head coach Gary Peters through her first three seasons at Catawba, and aided Peters in the coaching of summer basketball camps at that school. "Stephanie's playing experience will help us in the development of our post players," Peters said. "She's young but very intelligent and will pick things up quick. She'll make a great role model for our players and I think they will enjoy working with her because of her pleasant personality," he added. McCormick was a two-sport standout at High Point's Ragsdale High School as she starred in both basketball and track & field. Courtesty WCU Sports Information.
