Photo By Charles Pulliam Darius Ruck r, I .ad vocalist for Hootie and Tlic Blowfish "is the band's most obvious asset; his assertive vocals give the band a dramatic edge that contradicts their freshman status." - IN tune magazine Photo By Justin Menickelli Justin Menickelli Contributing Reporter June 4,1994 - "We want blow, We want blow, We want blow" was the chant from the near capacity crowd at Bailey's, wanting Hootie and The Bloivfish to play an encore. Just before, the crowd had screamed for an encore from the opening local band, Native Tounge. Hootie and The Blowfish, now touring the East Coast, dropped in to give the area a taste of a refreshing new sound in College music. Not since this audiophile has seen up-in-coming bands like Widespread Panic, The Samples, and Big Head Todd have I witnessed a band with such energy and crowd support. Hootie and The Blowfish blasted singles like "Time," "Hole my Hand," and "I only want to be with you" that kept the crowd boogiein' for two hours of nuevo-rock-pop excitement. The band is comprised on obviously well-rounded nusicians with "Without Rachel Cox's voice, Native Tounge would be just another College band..." - Bystander at Bailey's Photo By Justin Menickelli no apparent weak spot. This progrssive band fromthe University of South Carolina who recently signed with Atlantic Records, have a second albulm coming out in July. Their first albulm,"KOOTCHYPOP "sold upwards of 36,000 units with continuing sales.Watch for the new one,get the old one, you won't be disappointed. Native Tounge, on the other hand, were no small show. With their groovy, non-stop rythym, they definately deserve more recognition. The question is: Are we willing to share them with the rest of the world? Not yet. I'd like to keep them around for awhile. Afterall, rumours are going 'round that a Sony College Music represenative is looking forward to listening to their tape. Hint: Catch 'em while you can Cullowhee!
