10 Features March 24, 1994 Western Carolinian Dog-days at WCU: Are they numbered? Jeff Leatherwood Staff Reporter An estimated ten canines are well-known visitors on our campus. With such diverse names as "Butterfly," "Cat," and "Lady," ifs almost like having another subculture in the melting pot of Cullowhee. Contrary to popular belief, these animals who lounge around the Dodson Cafeteria area and race speeding drivers are not homeless strays. Nearly all of mem are owned by people of Cullowhee who allow their pets to roam free for whatever reasons. According to Gene Mc Abee, Director of Campus Security at WCU, a regulation exists ingoncampus property with- owners. Six dogs have in the past five months, and though Campus Security does not enjoy removing them from campus, the dilemma still exists. "Dogs and cars don't mix.,"Chief Mc Abee said. "Owners aren't doing them any favors by exposing them to these risks." Some students expressed their concerns and ideas for the canine population of WCU. Kevin Williams, a senior in Psychology, remarked that the dogs "didn't seem to be a nuisance, and students enjoy them, so they should be left alone. Let sleeping dogs lie." Jennifer Schnegg, a junior Biology student, appeared to empathize with our four- legged friends when she said,"the owners should keep them at home and pay more attention to them. Reckless drivers and some of the students are hurting your pets." Stray dogs are removed by Security to the Animal Shelter, where any licensed dogs are returned for a fee to their respective owners.
